284 Win

Fella's something funny happened today while working up some loads for a 284 Win, 162 A-Max I got readings on the chrony of 3009, 3011, 3003fps? now there were no pressure signs at all and truth the group was outstanding! BUT does this seem a tad on the high fps to you? I shot my 243 and the numbers matched my load sheets from when I developed the loads so I'm thinking the chrony is reading correctly. Here's the load if anyone would like to plug it into a ballistics program to compaire that would be awsome, the load is:
Winchester brass
Hybrid 100V
162 A-Max
GM210M primer
COL 3.100',barrel throated for this length .010 off the lands.

Thought this seemed a bit high for a 284 Win! your thoughts? Later,

Kirk

Some barrels are just faster than others.. Who made it and how long is it ?
Your only about 100 FPS off most loads in that range..

It's a McGowen 26' 1-9 twist, what information I have seen has been around the 2850 - 2900 range the main reason I ask. Thanks for the info! Later,

Kirk

A lot of factors influence velocity. The attached QuickLOAD uses the default case capacity which may be understated. If you provide the fired case water capacity and the powder charge, I will run another data sheet for you.

Second data sheet added.
Third data sheet added.

It appears that H4350,see attached) is a better fit. I use H4350 in 6mm Remington for anything heavier than 55 grains. It is a tolerant powder that has always provided fine accuracy and good velocity.

Note:
- 100% powder burning in your barrel length
- near 100% loading ratio
- good velocity within pressure limits

All are indicators of a good ballistic match.

YMMV

It's definitely do-able with Reloder 17 and a 162 A-max, even with a short throat. If you stumbled on an energetic lot of Hybrid 100V your numbers don't seem that crazy, though you may want to try another chrono.

Normally we've found that 100V can't match RL17 velocities in the .284 Winchester because you run out of case capacity before you can match RL17 speeds.

For more information on the .284 Win shooting 162 Amaxs check out our latest Gun of the Week article. I'm still doing the final editing, so please re-visit the article when it's completed later this weekend, but here's a preview:

I still have a pound of Hybrid before I get into the RL-17 but I may have to after all the good words about it. Fella's thanks and appreciate the information! Later,

Kirk
