284 Win.

Ok I did a seach and either I'm stupid or just got lazy but I never found what I was after! I was wondering about 284 Win loads with the 162 A-Max, I have a long action and the reamer has not hit the blank yet so I was looking for some ideas on powder that has worked well for you, the barrel will finish at 26" and with the throating reamer I should be able to set this up to gain the most powder capacity I can get so any help would be great! Later,

Kirk

Yes you are correct BUT I will be loading to a longer COL so things tend to change, my 243 shooting the 105 A-Max I can't find any data for what I'm shooting now which is Retumbo powder this is the reason I ask to find out if anyone is having good luck with X brand so I don't have to spend $18 bucks x's 8 plus X number of bullets to figure it out. While it would be great to spend that much time at the range I'd like to try and narrow my searches due to the not so endless budget :thumb: Later,

Kirk, Most guys on here are shooting the heavier VLD's 168-180 Bergers, JLK and the like that is probably why your having trouble finding anything

Here is some data on the Amax 162 grain bullet. The amax shot very well at 600 yards, the Sierra 175s and the Berger 180s were better at 1000 yards.

Yeah I know I just like to be different I guess, this is just a hunting rifle I have my long range paperkillers and metal thumpers but wanted something a bit different and thought the 284 would be a great rifle for these Okie deer and pigs. I was thinking the A-Max would be a good choice for deer and pigs granted I have have good luck with SMK's in 6mm and 308 but am just a little worried when the range gets further with the 243. Fella's thanks for the advice look forward to some more. Later,

Kirk

Ksmirk:

JerryHM has given you great info on the 162. He has also shot the 180 Bergers and 175 SMKs on a world class level in 1000 yd prone and has won the NBRSA 1000 yd BR Nationals by placing his 284 action and barrel in a BR stock. If you research the archives here and on the Long Range board, you will find his load data for the 180s and 175s as well.

Good luck,
Jim Hardy

Wow thanks fella's! I've been diggin' around and if I were to shoot the 180's it would be easy, but I'm just thinking the A-Maxes will work better as a game bullet. With my shooting I don't mind a long shot the whole reason behind the 284 plus we just found a brand new reamer :-) this barrel is a 1-9 so I should be able to have good luck with the heavier bullets and while the 26" barrel is shorter than most I should still get good velocity. Now I just need to figure out if I want to throat the barrel for the 162's or just set it up for the 180's just in case! I hate this part of building a rifle. Again thanks fella's I greatly appreciate it. Later,

Kirk
