Sunday afternoon a few friends gathered up on Rocky Top to put some
bullets on paper at 1500 yards. Alan Aldred had I believe a Stiller 300 tactical action chambered
in 300 wsm shooting 215's. While we were waiting for the others Alan
warmed the Stiller up at under the DOME at 800 yards on Ole Chuckie.
The third hit from the 215 Bergers lifted Chuckies left side up and out
of his mounting bracket. Alan thought he had broke Chuckie but the 300 wsm
was so rude that Chuckie just decided to stay down.
Next Alan and I took the paper target stand to the 1500 yard line. The
Gator can get us close but the last 1/4 mile has to be on foot and metal
targets or target stands can get pretty heavy.
At 1500 yards I had a 18 inch round plate and 2 paper silhouetts. I have been
wanting to print the 284 on paper at long range but had not got around to it.
Tracey Milsap, aka Big Bore Bat Shooter, and his son Tyler arrived along with
Shayne Haliburton and we were ready to begin the 1500 yard segment.
Alan hit the plate 3 consecutive shots and was ready for paper.
Pretty impressive shooting off the ground with a bipod!!
I had not shot my 284 in 3 weeks, so I took a couple of sighters at a 1,000 yard
cow patty and then dialed up to 1500. After a few shots I hit the plate and
then I let my neighbor Shayne Haliburton under the wheel. He hit the plate on
his first shot, and again on the 5 th shot. Pretty good for a guy who does not even
own a bench gun.
Now Alan shot his group on paper and then I told Tracey, Big Bore, to shoot
a paper group with the 284. His first sighter on plate was a hit, he took 2 more sighters,
and I told him to shoot four shots fast on paper.
Close to half MOA
8 inches at 1500 yards
Right target is the 284 win
SS Viper
Brux no taper, 9 twist, Vias brake
180 grain Hybrids
Left group is the Tactical 300 wsm
Alan was shooting on the ground off a bipod

Tracey was very happy with the group

group closeup

Shayne was all smiles after going 2 for 5 on the
steel plate

We moved back down the hill to the Dasher Dome and while
I made the 45 minute trip to retrieve the paper targets the
guys shot out to 800 yards with Tracey's tactical 6 XC with 115 DTAC's
and his 308. The 6 XC as always was awesome.
Tyler brought his 300 Blackout and I was impressed with it
at the 300 yard line.
Great friends, great guns, BEST OF TIMES
