6.5-284 accuracy after 2,000 rounds...

This is a question for you bench rest shooters. There is much talk about loosing accuracy after about 1000-1500 rounds in the 6.5-284. Just how inaccurate is the barrel going to be? Are we talking cant hit a paper plate at 100 yards or what?

No problem with hitting paper plates at 100 yards, but accuracy will suffer for comp shooters after 1500 or less depending on components.......
Would probably still be a good varminter.....

Thing is too if your shooting comp, read 10-20 shots in a few mintutes time you probably wont burn the barrel as rapidly either.

Mine became non competitive after 1200rds. Groups went from sub6" at 1K to 14" plus. A set back and recrown seems to have fixed this. A rifle grouping 14" at 1K would make a fine varminter.

ShaneO,
My 6.5x284 had about 1300rds through it and was shooting in the .4s @ 100yds. I used it for tactical shooting and when I practiced with it I was careful not to get it hot. After my last match I had stopped at H&S and had the barrel maker scope the barrel. He told me it was just starting to show some throat errosion an should be good for another 1000 or so if I kept shooting it like I was.

I used it for two years and shot it in sevaral matches and tried to avoid the man on man stuff that gets barrels really hot.

The next summer I tore a muscle training for a match and was unable to compete for the summer so I gave the rifle to my son to use and told him NOT to get in his favorite match, the man on man crap with my rifle. Well guess what?? He did and one tactical match and 300rds later it was junk!!

It went from a .4 to a .75 rifle in 300rds. SOoo....It will depend on how you use it. I honestly think I could have gotten over 2000rds out of mine if I hadn't gave it to my son to shoot.

If you don't get them hot they will last a lot longer.

What do you use to keep yours clean? Any specific ritual? Just breaking mine in and want it to last as long as possible. Barrels aren't getting any cheaper.

I do not shoot benchrest but do shoot NRA 1000yd with a sling and scope. Some years back during a State team match at Camp Perry, I lost one point out of 40 shots,399-?X; over half with X's)with a 6.5-284 barrel with over 2000 rounds through it. My team mate lost 2 points with a 6.5-284 with similar number of rounds through his barrel. The 10-ring is 2 moa and the x-ring is 1 moa.

You don't. Cleaning hard has ruined more barrels than shooting hard has. Clean the bolt and trigger but leave the barrel alone until accuracy drops off. Then clean it with a good solvent like Hoppes #9 and a few dry patches and start shooting again.

People,
Don't I know it!! He did send it back with a new barrel he won at the match but then of course dad had to have it put on!!

He's shooting for the Neb Guard so he's their problem now. He has all kinds of neat stuff now. I told him its a good thing we don't live close togeather because I would be stealing from him now and would probably wind up in Levenworth.,HA)

You must have some mighty big varmints, or limit your varmint hunting to about 300yds..
Biggest area my woodchucks offer is ~6"
