284 win, and h4831 sc

I wish you luck Ben. I had an 8.5 twist 5R krieger chambered in shehane that was about as useful at 1000yds as a 12G shotgun shooting #9 shot. Now using 1:9 twist maddco's and the first of them was fantastic shooting 180 hybrids just over 2800fps with RL19. It will be installed on my new action at 28 inches when the action gets here. I have another sitting ready to have chambered at 30 inches in shehane as well (plus two 6mm barrels as dashers). H4350 will be the powder used first as I have 6kg of it, RL powders are not available here now and I have maybe half a pound left max. Looking forward to getting back into shooting again after not having a comp gun for 6 months.

6 MONTHS! I would be in vapor-lock! I have a friend who lives in the northern New York area where winter shuts them off for 6 months! It is very difficult for them to make great gains because they can't shoot all year. I am very fortunate to live in Texas where we do shoot all year. You will be back on track soon! Good luck my friend!

Mr Pierce is building me a new action and it shouldnt be far off, hopefully Aus customs dont hold it up too much when it gets here. Time to rebuild and do it right the first time!

With my 27" barrel, I see 2825fps from a 175smk over 54gr H4831sc.

From my 23.5" barrel, it's more like 2700, so I use 50gr H4350 instead, which nets ~2775fps.

I don't see how you guys are supposibly getting the velocities you say? I'm using 57.5 grains of 4831sc and my velocity is just 2864 fps and this is from a 30" barrel. This is from my 284 Shehane, not a 284. I must really have a slow barrel is all I can say.

I fought the same thing in my 284. With H4831SC and HBN coated bullets, I was getting extremely slow velocities. I ran as high as 59.5 grains of powder (case full). The velocity was finally up - 2975, but the accuracy wasn't what I was looking for. Eliminating HBN didn't help. I eventually changed powder and now have the easiest cartridge I've ever tuned.

What powder did you change to? I'm more about the accuracy over extreme velocities but I would like to find a happy medium. Currently my 284 Shehane is shooting on avg 1.5" at 500 yards. I know this isn't a 500 yard cartridge but that's where I do my final testing once I get my loads worked up. I've shot only once at 1000 and it faired well. I've since changed from a 215m primer to a BR 2 primer and the groups actually shrunk. I've not tested for consistency yet mainly due to the 600 yard season is here and I've been tuning get my 6 Dasher barrel on this action. BTW I'm also using HBN I don't think that's hurting me in the velocity as I do have more case capacity to use if I want the rifle just seems to like where it's shooting right now.

I did try RL-17 on one shot and gave that up instantly I blew a primer out of the case at 55 grains. So way too hot and I chose that starting load due to a friend 284 shooting at 55.5 grains. So I figured or thought I'd be safe starting there.

Has anyone tried RL-22 in the Shehane with 180's?

It should work GREAT! But it is too dirty for extended strings of fire. In F-Open you will have 60 shots for record PLUS sighters. This may be too many shots, especially towards match 3. For hunting it is excellent and possibly even BenchRest competition, you could get by with it. I don't know, I do not shoot BenchRest. There is little doubt it would be great for just accuracy, in some, if not most rifles.

Soooo..........some h4831sc is fast some is slow, h4350 is alright, but it's best to use h4831, around 2800 fps is the goal, and be happy when you get there. Does that sound about right?

I would set my goal to use H4831SC and my target velocity would be right at 2800-2825.

[/quote]I agree with Ben. Most of the guys that I shoot with all run 55.5gn of H4831sc, to stay around 2850 fps.

James:

I was running 2951 with 3 and under ES on my Shehane with H4831SC. I have also had one slow barrel. As you know as a very established and record holding shooter, slow barrels happen -- mine was down about 100 fps and was not accurate. With 345 rounds down the tube, it came off. The next barrel was a National Record setter in the prone at 1000 yards. I was running just a little less charge than your Shehane. I found H4350 to be very accurate as well but to slow to get the best out of my Shehane.

Jim

Chris:

As an aside, the 210 is a very good primer, but it will not hold up to what the harder cup primers will give you. The "Russian" primers and CCI will give you the accuracy without the primer problems that you will get with the 205. Also, a small primer pin will not only enhance your accuracy, but it will allow you to establish an accurate match load at a higher node.

Just a couple of little things that make a big difference.

Regards,
Jim

I went to H4350 on the suggestion of a friend. I've backed down to 2800 fps and have the easiest time keeping it tuned. At first, I ran it with HBN, but found no benefit to it. Darn thing just shoots.

Straight 284, .218 freebore

Shoot Dots, our paths cross once again. I've been on again, off again with load development due to Mother Nature. I will tell you that after four rounds the bbl. it just quit holding copper and and the borescope made the bore look like the color of the inside of a case that has been through a dry tumbler. Very light grey and patched clean with 1 patch of Butches, 2 dry and 1 more of Break clean. When I move to extended strings of fire, that will tell me if it fouls quickly or not. I will keep all advised as the testing/FF continues.

What does everyone find for an increase in temperature? For example if the temperature was 45 and the rifle shot about 2670 fps and then the temp. is low 60's should I see and increase of about 30 - 40 fps? Thanks

Well I'm testing my new straight .284 now it's shooting .75 inch at 300 give or take a sixteenth. I have no clue how fast it's going yet. The barrel is a tight bore Bartlein 9 twist. Shooting 54 gr 4831sc. I'm hoping the tight bore is gonna get 2775 at least. We'll see.

I started using 52gr of 4451. Berger 180s Lapua brass CCI BR Primers. 31.5" barrel. 2920 on the velocity. Shoots very well out to 1760.

Great accuracy but not great velocities from 4831sc. 6.5-284, better velocities and great accuracy. Great all around powder for all of the non magnum 7mm and 6.5s. 53.4 accuracy load in 6.5-284 @ 3125 w/140 vld. 54.5 accuracy load in 284win @ 2960 w/168 vld.
