284 Velocity ?

jbpmidas

MR F-T/r
I did my ladder test yesterday on my .284 Shehane, trying to find a fireforming load that shoots well enough to compete with at 600. I am using H4831SC, Wolf primers, Lapua brass and 162 A-Maxes. I got a nice cloverleaf measuring .240 for three shots at 53.8, 54.0, and 54.2. The test was done at 200 yards. Anyone running this bullet and powder charge that can tell me their velocity? I will be chrono'ing when I shoot these charges for group. I'm just curious and impatient! My barrel is a Krieger, 28", 9 twist and the brass is new, unformed.

Re: Velocity ?

1/8 moa at 200?!!? I'd say just skip all of the BS and just shoot!! 1/8 MOA is exceptional for ANY round.....let alone FF.

I think you have a winner.

Just my .02.

I'm excited, don't get me wrong, but I've seen similar results that I couldn't duplicate! I will say I was steadier than usual from a bipod and prone. My goal for the rifle is 10 shots, 1/2" at 200. I think the rifle is capable, just don't know if I am!

As a disclaimer: I am waiting for my stock to come in so I can break in my 284 Shehane, so I am only passing down what I have been told, but not actually used. I have the following loaded up and ready to go.

When fireforming new cases with the 162gr Amax, use a lighter load, if you don't do this then you risk premature case head expansion.
Fireform with the 162gr Amax bullets jumped approx 20 thou. This is the best bullet seating position for accuracy if you use the 162grainers as your short range round as well as fireforming.I was told to use 55.5gr of H4831SC which is good for 2900fps in a 32 inch barrel. The individual that shared this with me has used it while fire forming to win 600 yard matches.

"180gr Berger VLDs are best when jammed approx 16 thousandths. I use 57gr of H4831SC for the 180gr loads good for 2930fps with 32" barrel.

58gr of H4831SC for the 162gr Amax for 3000fps with the 32" barrel. Use CCI LR primers."

WOW what a group. I am oh, so jealous yet happy for you.

Seems no matter what I do with one of my Krieger 260AI's I can't do better than .7's with any consistancy. You got it together.

I was shooting prone from a Gen III Sinclair F-T/r bipod. I do very little from a bench anymore because I need all of my limited trigger time in the position I shoot in. Like I said, I was steadier than normal.

Anyone got any input on the velocity I may be getting?

I have not given the A-maxes a try yet but here is what I have gotten with the 180 Hybrids out of my Shehane. Fireforming and ladder testing prone off the Centershot bipod at 300 gave me consistent, repeatable 1/2" outside to outside groups with 56.0, 56.5 and 57.0 grains of H4831SC powder running around 2930 fps out of a 30"Bartlein. There was another node on the low end around 53.0 grains also.

I am currently running 56.5 grains of H4831SC, loaded at the lands with .001 neck tension. I got a 10 shot, 300 yards prone group, doing final load testing before a 1000 yard regional that had all landed within 1" vertical of each other. The groups were 2 distinct groups of 5 shots each with nearly no vertical in each 5 shots seperated by about 1/2 inch of space. again, prone off a bipod at 300 yards. I attribute the spread to me. I just looked for the target as I tend to save these thing, but can't find it at the momement.

As for the 162 A-maxes, I have read others stating to load one grain higher than a good 180 grain load. I have the bullets, just have not tried it yet.

The Shehane has been incredibly easy to make shoot well. Maybe I got lucky, but it has been fun so far.

I've been running a straight 284 w/ 162's and Lapua brass for 600 & 1k for several years now and after approx. 1500 rounds i can't find a replacement load. Just under 57gr. of 4831sc gives me 2975', half thou neck tension and russian primers out of a 31" Bartlein and Barnard action. As the A-max's take more effort to get weighed and sorted compared to the 180 Hyb. I had hoped the 180's would be the new "go to" bullet but haven't found that recipe yet. Interesting test last week at 1000 showed the unpointed 180's at 100'/sec. slower but higher BC had an identical come-up as the lower BC but faster A-max; +24 & 3.0 for wind. Unfortunately the 180 Hybrids could barely hold the 10 ring for vertical and the 162's usually are half that. Still looking for the recipe, Eric in DL

For someone who shoots both, and only concerning wind resistance, do you think the higher BC is worth the extra expense over the 162's?

I really can't say I have enough data comparing the two. Presently I would say no but pointing the 180's should/could give them a decidedly nice advantage over the 162's. Concerning cost, that question is only answered by you. One must determine the cost/benefit of paying the extra $$ and hopefully gaining a point or two per string. VERY cost effective bullet (162's) vs. the $$$ 180's. Eric in DL

I finally got to break in my 284 shehane shooting the 162 AMAX's with 55.5gr of H4831SC out of a 28" Bartlien gain twist barrel ending in 1:9 twist.

I was getting 1759 - 1789 ES (if memory serves).

I will pull the memory card from the chronagraph and post up the actual results.

As well as the 162's shot at 200, the 180's would really have to perform for me to pay almost double!

I used the 162's quite a bit back in 2006 and 07, the 180 hybrids exclusively since they hit the market.
For a long range match, there is no way I would choose the 162's over the 180 Hybrid even if the 180's were 5 times more.
I'm not trying to bash anyone or anything, the Hybrids are just that good.

To be perfectly honest, if I had a choice I would switch to a 6.5 X 47 for 600 yards and under. If the wind was bad enough to justify shooting the 7mm, personally I would still want the Hybrids.

There is an exception. If the price of the bullets was going to keep me from competing I would definitely shoot what I could afford. Anything is better than not shooting.

Here is the data from my barrel break in. Pretty happy since this was cleaning after each shot for the first 3 rounds then every five there after. Lot's of clean/cold bore, clean/warm, etc. very pleased.

162 AMAX, H4831SC, 55.5 grains, CCI primers, Lapua 6.5-284 Brass, expanded with sinclair neck expander, flash hole debured, primer pockets uniformed.
