.284 loading question

Site $$ Sponsor
I have used H4350 with all of my .284's. My buddy is using H4831SC with his and I am gonna try his load, he is using 54.5 grains with a 180 hybrid and a 210 match primer with sized up 6.5X284 lapua brass. should I start low or just try a hand full of his in my gun? I would think that load would be a little hot but he has NO pressure signs

With looking at his fired cases I am pretty confident it will be ok, but always like to get another opinion before I possibly damage a $$$$$ rifle.

What kinda speeds are you guys getting with the Hybrids 180's out of 30" barrels??? I am hoping to get mine around 2950ish but don't know if thats gonna work.

Not going to happen with a 284. Even the 284 Shehane will fall a little short unless you push it.

dragman,
What is your friend velocity with 54.5 of H4831sc with Berger 180 hybrids. That's the same load i will be using in my 1000 yds BR gun. Thanks Jeffery

He said he is getting 2908 with his Krieger. I am gonna get mine out and do some testing I have a Bartline barrel.

dragman,
Thanks keep us informed.

well I shot it and pushed it clean up to 55 grains and this thing FLAT OUT SHOOTS. problem is my battery's were dead in my chrono so I am in the dark for speed LOL. Gotta get back out soon.

Guys
I can get a safe 2950 from my straight .284 using N560, my chamber is throated long, +220thou 30" Krieger Lapua Brass and 56+ grains of N560 BR2 primer, (180hybrid) load shoots better than I can, brass has been fired about 4 times, primer pockets are as tight as the first firing and I can even chamber a fired case without F/L sizing (I did this just out of curiosity)
I am aware barrel life will not be as good as 4831sc but Shehane velocities with no fireforming.....
This may not work for everybody however I know Erik Cortina uses 560 with great success.

I have had no luck with my .284's and N560. the two powders that have worked for mine until this one were H4350 and RL 17. I had a Krieger with a 312 tight neck and .190 freebore that was shooting 2933fps with 175's and 2925 with the 180's with H4350. I could get 3003fps consistantly with the 175's and H4350 and it shot really really well but would blow primers. This gun is shooting H4831SC really well and 54.5 is gonna be the magic load with the 180 hybrids I need a new chrono or maybe just batterys, but I will get a velocity on it soon hopefully. I have found that when I develop a load and settle on it then chrono it after I get better results cuz I don't chase the speed lol. I am hoping the 54.5 with the H4831SC and a 210Federal primer in my BAT with a Bartline 30" barrel and .190 freebore will get me over 2925 but I will take whatever it gives cuz it shoots to good to change.

I don't think Erik used N560 in .284 Win but did in the Shehane. He has been mostly shooting a 7mm Magnum wildcat with N165. I worked with N560 in my Shehane and found that it would not hold vertical in our temperature range. We will often see, as at the recent California State LR, <55°F to >75°F during the day. Some days the range can be 40°F. N560 just doesn't have the tolerance window that H4831 SC does. [br]
My 32" barrel works best at ~2940-2950, obviously very doable.

Dragman, besides checking batteries in your chrony, make sure the sensors are clean.

A friend of mine thought he had a bad chrony until I mentioned that I cleaned my sensors after getting some moly dust (don't ask) on them. After cleaning, his worked like a charm.

Steve is right, I used it on my Shehane. 2,970 fps. from 30" barrel, easy on brass. I was going to use N560 in my magnum until Gary Costello himself recommended N165, and it shoots like a dream! Thanks Gary!

Hi Erik/Steve
Apologies, for my mistake,
glad you are getting on with 165 in the Mag, i have just killed a barrel with R25 in about 700 rnds, (my last barrel lasted 1200+ with 165 ! (only reason I did not use this in my 7/270 Wsm was I just could not get the velocity in this specific barrel with 165 and got pressure early.

Steve,

we do not have your high temps here (I wish sometimes) so we do not experience to many issues with temp sensitivity, however i did record a velocity shift with r25 (7/270 wsm) of more than 50 fps from a very cool summer morning to 85 degree by midday, (another reason why my next barrel will be with a different powder.)
regards to all.
Gary

Hi Gary if you want to get those velocities in a straight .284 Reloader 17 is the way to go.
You will get 2950 with around 52 grains.
My first rifle used this loading and is still shooting great with 2100 rounds under her belt.
Never had any problems with temp, shot it in the winter months and at Bisley at that one long range meet when it topped in the low 30's,
Give me a shout if you need some to try.
Cheers
Dave.

Cheers Dave

I have half of a 20kg tub of N560 to use and the gun is shooting very very well so if it ain't broke.....

I do have some R17 in "stock" however I really appreciate the offer.
catch up soon.
Gary
