H4350 OR H4831SC for best barrel life in 284 Winchester

A buddy of mine has two demon loads for his 284 Winchester. One load with 54gr H4350 the other 57gr H4831SC with the 162gr Amax giving indentical accuracy, velocity, SD & ES. Question is which load is going to give better barrel life - 54gr H4350 or 57gr H4831SC?

Neither, and both. You can't limit it to just the charge weight or propellant. Cleaning practices. How hot you get the barrel, and for how long. Time between shots and / or cleaning. If you shoot it hot, long, often and dirty. It aint gonna last no matter what you load. Cleaning without a bore guide. Using an uncoated rod. Leaving amonia based copper solvent in too long. Mixing solvents. Overly tight patches. All things that can lead to problems. Then again not getting copper fouling out between sessions is a no no too. I'd say load what you want with either of the afore mentioned recipes. Adhere to good barrel care, and enjoy the 284 for a long time. The straight up 284 isn't a super barrel burner over all.

Loaded to equal pressure, H4350 is a little faster and hotter than H4831 (either) and is likely to deliver less barrel life. It is also not likely the difference will be large.
