.284 cal. 180 gr. SMK

Has anyone shot this bullet yet? I would like to know true B.C...
No info on sierra's website, I will be calling on Monday. Should be very close to the 180 gr. Berger Hybrid, but much less expensive.
Graf's has them for about $32 per 100.
Should workout good in my new 28" Pacnor.

This is the 1st I've heard about a new 180 from Sierra - just had to go over to Graf's website to confirm, but they're out of stock.

Given that Litz's book shows the S175MK's G7 BC within just a few points of Berger's 180VLD (.327 vs .337), I'd think Sierra would've had to have made some major progress in bullet design to have made it worth the expense of bringing out a new 7mm heavy. I should be receiving a couple of boxes of Berger's newer 180s & 182s next week, and will be looking forward to seeing what Sierra's new 180s will do.

I thought that Berger had discontinued the 7mm 182?? I think they had a clearance posted on their website recenly.

I talked to one of the top F-Open shooters at the Berger SW Nationals and he says the 180 SMK has worked fine for him in a 1:9 twist in normal match temoperatures. I've got some to test in my 1:8.5 and 1:9 7mm barrels.

G1 BC for the new Serria 180 gr. is .660. The bullet is a secant ogive.
Burger no longer makes the 7mm 182 gr. I believe they have a new 175 gr. hybrid out. High BC.

Tony,

I also got a box of these from Graf's (all they had) and will be testing them in a 9" twist .284. The Berger 180 Hybrid is tough competition but it could happen. Please post your results. We are deep in the frigid San Diego winter here but I will force myself to the range, soon. ;)

I tested some a couple of weeks ago in my 284-Barnard/Brux 1x9 twist 31". Chrono'd at 2880-fps range and was getting some very tight test groups at 200yds. 5 shots at .683" could be better - I'm not not that good a shot. :o

I am going to try some in an F-Class club match next month.

Well I managed to get hold of some of the new 180 7mm SMK's from HPS on Friday.
With the Berger 180 VLD going over the £50 mark by some dealers :o it was refreshing to pay £32.60 a 100 for the new Sierras.
With a claimed BC of .660 they are going to be a real rival for the Berger

Well I was keen to get them tested so miked them up in my .284 to ascertain oal.
I know Sierras like a bit of jump so loaded some up 15 thou off the lands and some 10 thou into the lands.
I varied my load for the 175 SMK's I usually use to +/- 0.5gn over my standard 52gns Reloader 17.
These seem to be very accurate and easy to tune bullets.
It didn't make any real difference by altering powder charge/seating depth to the accuracy of the bullet.
This is good news as it seems easy to tune and has a broad accuracy node. So if temperature varies the velocity it should still easily stay in the sweet spot.

All groups were 5 shots @ 100 yards. I got a bit excited with the group on the bottom right and pulled my last shot.
As you can see its grouping abilities are very consistent.
Now I need to move on to long range testing to confirm perfomance but early indications are excellent.

Cheers

I cant read what is written on your target, can you elaborate or which seating depth the bullets seemed to like for you?

The top sequence of groups were 10 thou into the lands and charge weights running 51.5/52/52.5 grains of Reloader 17.
The lower sequence of groups were the same spread of charge weights but the bullets seated 15 thou off the lands,
My point with these it seems that they all grouped pretty well with a variety of charge weights and seating depths.
Cheers
Dave
