284 and new Berger Hybrid 180 ---- reports??

Jerry,

I've noticed that you seem to trend toward the bottom end of the scale when it comes to load charge ,and velocity..I took note of this while visiting with you at the Nationals this year .What did you find when you pushed the load up into the range where alot of guys are running the 284..ie...54.8 and up using the vld's??

Also interesting to note that the laod listed above with the best ES/SD was the second largest of of the bunch...

Great input..I managed to find a few more of the 180 hybrids...I've got a couple hundred of the 175 XLD coming as well. I'll post my results when I try them...

Thanks

Jim

Jerry

Have you seen any difference between the lot #'s on aprt #28407..I've got both 2598 and 2600...Just wondering..

Jim

Jim,
My 284 shoot best right around 2800 fps with the 180 vlds, the 1K groups open up if I go over about 2830 fps. Never could see good results between ES and group size.

When you shoot a 284 across the chronograph make sure the chrono is as far as you can get it from the muzzle. Use 15 feet or more, at 10 feet the blast wave can cause some erroneous readings.

I shoot so many different disciplines that I wont be testing any 284s until late in September.

Tony,

The P/N’s and G7 BC’s

28404 - 7mm 180 gr BT (Medium Tangent Ogive) - G7 = .314
28405 - 7mm 180 gr VLD (Long Secant Ogive) - G7 = .337
28406 - 7mm 182 gr XBT (Extra Long Tangent Ogive) - G7 = .332
28407 - 7mm 180 gr Hyb (Extra Long Hybrid Ogive) - G7 = .345
28408 - 7mm 175 gr XLD (Extra Long Secant Ogive) - G7 = .336

Thanks Larry..

Tony,

I've found that the 175XLD's shot better for me than the 180vld's do...I'm jumping them about .010-.015 using 51.5grs of 4350, and they are shooting under actual 1/2" groups at 250 yards. They only shot OK with 4831sc...

I'm goign to play with them a little more as I go...

Thanks, Jim. I'm probably going to have to get some of those. The 177gr Cauteruccio has done very well in both of my rifles. Maybe the 175 would do so as well.

Hi Tony
I note with interest your comment regarding the 177 cauterico,
I have a quantity of the 176gr vld which I and a few others cannot get to shoot (I have tried them in every 7mm barrel I own without success) the consensus is the are overbore, I do not have the exact measurement but I think from memory they are .2845, my bullets are several years old, is the 177 a new bullet? I also have a quantity of 189 vld which shoot even worse that the 176, i had a 8.5 twist .300/7wsm chambered for these but they are a no go.

I would be extremely interested in how you got yours to shoot and what powder/cartridge/seating depth combo you used.

H Gary.
The 176 and 177 seem to be different bullets, at least the one I have had; but I load them both just like the Berger 180s. I use whatever charge of IMR-7828SSC gives me about 2900 fps with the Berger 180 VLD then jam them 0.010-0.015 inches, again just like I would the Bergers. Loaded that way, they seem to print a little lower on the target than the Bergers would, so I think the BC must be a little less than the 180 Berger. I agree that the Cauteruccios all appear to be overbore by .0005 or more in my experience. I had never checked that sort of thing until I loaded up some 162 A-Maxs that fell out of the cases using my normal die setup for the Bergers and the 176 Cauteruccios gave me a couple of loaded necks that were nearly 0.001 larger than what I try to have with much more seating force. Some of that may have been the necks in that set of cases along with the bullets. Despite these differences, sorted by diameter, bearing surface, and weight then trimmed and pointed, I have shot a couple of 199s and 200s with the 176s and 177s in 600 yard NRA registered F-Class matches. I also clean all the lube off them with rubbing alcohol. I also like the tough Sierra jackets Bob uses. No blowups.

Thanks Tony,

is this from a .284 or Shehanne .284?

I am shooting mine around 3050 (ish) in a Alan Warner 7/300WSM, I will slow them down and see what happens! (this is the node the 180's perform well with.
I use bob's excellent 6.5 141 vld with great results, they are working well with the 6.5 saum and group as tight at the 140 Berger.

with regards

Gary

284 Shehane from 1:9 twist and 1:8.5 twist 31 inch straight 1.250 inch barrels. I have gotten the same velocity node with Brux, Krieger and Broughton barrels and with H4831SC, IMR-7828SSC and MRP. Different powder charges depending on the barrel and powder but the nodes stay pretty much the same for the same bullet and barrel dimensions. I have gotten to 3000 fps with the Shehane but the vertical has not been good. I have been testing a very fast barrel lately and have gotten a nice node at 3000 in 90 degree F temperatures but I'm not sure that would be possible with a different barrel or even with this barrel at lower temperatures. I haven't yet decided whether the issue is instability at high chamber pressures or recoil while the bullet is still in the barrel, but it has been hard for me to get the 180 grain bullets to shoot well at 3000 plus until this barrel came along. Actually, the best vertical I have every achieved with any barrel and the 180 VLD has been at 2800 fps with a 1:8.5 twist Brux but I like the extra 100 fps for reduced wind drift and the vertical is almost the same.
