284 and new Berger Hybrid 180 ---- reports??

Jim:

I am sitting on 1000. I intend to test them this week from the prone at 600. A friend of mine with a nice hammer of an F-Class gun is going to test them as well. We are also testing the 180 VLD hunting vs. Thick Jacket vs. the Hybrid within the next 10 days or so.

I will keep you informed -- if you beat me to it, I would like to know the results of your testing.

Thanks,
Jim Hardy

Jims -

I also bought 500 and will be testing soon in an Eliseo RTM .284. VLDs shoot very well in this rifle so I have high hopes for the Hybrid.

Steve:

Same thing here. The VLD shoots very nice so the Hybrid will really have to step up -- but it is exciting my hopes. Keep us posted so we can compare notes.

Thanks,
Jim Hardy

Jim,
I think that is the bullet I shot at 600 yards in the F nationals, first target was 150-7X without any load development.
I tested three different 7mm bullets (pre-production).
The load used was the same as used with the VLDs, only difference was they were loaded 0.015" short of the lands.

Jim, I thought you gave up on the 284 and went back to the Dasher - right after I ordered a 284 as you are my F-Class hero.

George

Thanks guys...

George,

Your in the bad need for a hero ;D....I'm shooting both the Dasher and the straight 284....Both are shooting well....The 284 jsut takes a little learning to drive...

Jim

Jerry:

Since the nationals, have you done any load development with the Hybrid? Any info on your best loads into or off the lands will be very useful. I hope the Hybrid has a wide seating depth node.

Thanks,
Jim Hardy

I also have 500 of the 180 Hybrids will be testing them this weekend in my 284 shehane. with RL - 17 . Will keep you up to date .

Jim:

For all intents, I have only shot the Shehane from the prone. I have a very tight position that is basically on top of and straight behind the gun. The recoil is at 12:00. With my large size, the recoil itself is not an issue.

A friend of mine who is a new F-Open shooter also locks down strong with a lot of butt in the shoulder and the cheek piece adjusted where his head takes a very solid rest -- like a third hand. He is accustomed to shooting a 300 Wea Mag so no problem there. When I shot a little F-Class prior to the .5 target, I shot a 300 WSM and I locked on strong. No problem.

Bottom line, if I did not lock on the WSM, it would string vertical. When I locked, it hammered. I would not be suprised if the Shehane took the same type of driving technique. I have had some F-Class shooters tell me that they cannot drive the 6BR based chamberings with the same technique as the heavier chamberings like the various WSM and RSAUM chamberings. What is your take on the difference, if any?

Thanks,
Jim Hardy

Mark:

Yes, please keep us informed on the RL-17 testing. I have almost 20 pounds of the stuff (18 or so), and my testing some time back had mixed results.

Thanks,
Jim Hardy

tested some hybrid's today in a .284. held inch and a half elevation at 600yds. for 25 shots. barrel is a kreiger 9 twist 33in. long

Jim, I agree that RL17 is awful stuff that you should not have to tolerate. In the interest of camaraderie, I will volunteer to relieve you of the burden and promise to properly dispose of it. ;)

Seriously, I am getting better results from slower powders with the VLDs. Best to date have been with RL22, H4831SC & IMR 7828 SSC. My barrel is a 29" Brux, nitrided and chambered .313 neck X .220 throat.

Jim,

Your probably dead on about driving the guns...I'm so use to running the Dasher(semi-free recoil mode) that i have a hard time really locking into the 284/Shehane. I'm going to give it another go around, and really lock in. Something else I'm changing is my position behind the gun. I've alway laid behind the gun at an angle to the gun and rest. I'm going to get right behind it, 12 oclock, lining everything up, and see if that helps as well. I'll be doing these things one at a time so I'll know if or when I find the key...I'll report back here in a few weeks...boss is flying the wings off the new airplane, and will not make the range for a week or so...

Jim

I believe that the Shehane does have to be held to some degree. Nik Taylor and Kenny Adams both shoot my guns in Florida last winter and I was amazed at how the torque rolled the gun as it recoiled. May explain why I get better vertical at 2800 than 2900 fps with the 180s??

Steve:

For real, I will put the RL-17 on you at a good price. Of course, you would have to pick it up but I can make it all yours :)

Jim Hardy

I can't see any consistent difference between the ES and SD at either velocity. Funny thing is, the one I shoot at 2800 is just a Remington converted to single shot and the one that runs 2900 is a Nesika K single shot. Both with 31 inch straight 1.250 barrels. The difference is not great but it has puzzled me. In any event, I mostly shoot 600 yards at 2800 and 1000 at 2900. The difference in wind drift at 1000 more than compensates for any differences in vertical, if any.

I have definitley found my 284s (with 4 different barrels, 2 different actions, 3 different stocks) shot better at 2800 fps. The 2920 fps load would not stay inside our .5 moa 10 ring at long range. each time I get a new barrel, I work up a load to 2900-2950 fps and struggle with it for a while, before moving back to my 2800-2820 fps load. The faster load would stay inside our 1 moa 9 ring, but just wouldnt reliably tack hole in our 10 ring (or .4moa X ring).
The difference in loads is 2800fps load is AR2209 (H4350) powder, while 2920 fps load is AR2213SC (H4831SC) powder, with CCI BR2 primers.
As for recoil/gun handling, In the 3 different stocks I have used, all prefered a firm hold. I still experiment with holds occaisionaly, but usualy, after 3 or so shots free recoil, or light hold, I switch straight back again. (this is only the case with my 7mm, not my others)

Finally on the ground long enough to do a little testing today with the 180 Hybrids. Testing was done at 250 yards today - mirage kept me from shooting 300 yards - just couldn't see the target well enough...I was doing a latter test today, so all groups were 3-shots, not my normal 5...

54.8grs 4831sc, New Lapua brass, no-turn neck, CCI BR-2's

I found my zero(just touching lands -these bullets require seating out alot futher than the 180vlds), then went both directions in .005 steps from a .0020 jump, to a .0025 jam....Measurements are actual group sizes, not reported in MOA...

.0020 jump - .967 group - perfect, and I mean perfect vertical - 2 into one hole, and a let up pulled the 3rd out to open the group
.0015 jump and .0010 jump - 1.17 and 1.49 - wind and a little vertical.
.005 - .472 group - this group formed a perfect clover leaf...
.0000 - .442 group - two into one hole, one leaked about 1 1/2 out the bottom 7 oclock..
.005 into lands - a1.125 inches - showing vertical..
,0010 into lands - about 2", but mostly wind, with about 1/2 vertical- can't account for this one - going to repeat..
.0015 jammed and up - each step open the groups up more and more...

Going to load up the best loads(.0020 jump, and .005 jump and zero and try them in 5 and 10 shot groups now...they look like they are going to shoot!! ;D
