280 ai case bulge

We grind custom reamers along with standard reamers and some times have a few on the shelf . If you want to order standard reamers then we may have one on the shelf . If you state a size of base to be ground then we will oblige that request also . If you order a reamer with a smaller base it will be ground to requested size and sent . Ask for a copy of the print for your custom order before it is started so you know what you are getting before its ground . You always should ask so you can check brass size to the reamer print . But beware most all the die companies except for a couple make there dies to standard SAAMI - minus there shop tolerance . That may not work with a tight base reamer. If you know your die will work with a tight based chamber ( .002 or what ever you want over base brass size ) then send in your reamer and we will grind the body down to any size you need or think you need . I always listen to the customer and try and grind a reamer to there request size . Be very clear on reamer size or brass size , if your not clear or I haven't had a cup of coffee I could add .002 to what I thought you said was brass size.,!. If a customer is not clear or he states that he has a standard die the chamber reamer will usually come in at min. SAAMI at base no larger . Only factory reamers are max SAAMI although some of our competitors sell SAAMI reamers in min. SAAMI + .001 as shelf stock because of the modern day die situation or maybe they want a one size fits all stocked tool ( I haven't figured that out yet ) . John Whidden dies and a few Redding stock dies work .A couple of the smaller shops will get you the correct size also . I have seen this badly undersized brass more and more lately where a fellow has to send a case or reamer print in just to get a die that will work with it . John has been bombarded with custom dies to work with small base cases and I can see why . But remember the folks that mas produce the brass have told me that half the bitching and complaining on the web , is just a lot of people talking , funny how people view their expensive brass these days and what they think of the people that use it . My 2 cents Thanks Dave

Hey thanks for the input Mr. Kiff...it's appreciated! I think the brass makers would be okay with all of us ruining cases after a 2 or 3 firings from oversized chambers, not that there is a high enough demand already! I do prefer a tight chamber for this build and I have submitted a print through your website. I use one of Alan Warner's sizing die's so he will cut the new body once I have some fired brass to send.

Just what is it that you do that your cases don't last more than 2 or 3 firings, with 5 thou of body clearance? I have loaded 22-250 cases with that much clearance more than 40 times each, and had no problems with the body failing. I finely threw them out cuz Lapua started making the caliber.

So... what are you doing to "ruin" them? ???

I'm crushing them under intense forces from using a vise. Why? Because I dislike the sight of bulges on my brass so much, they wouldnt last more than 2 or 3 firings.

I had the same problem with a 22-250AI that I built using an off the shelf PTG reamer. Switching to Nolser or Lapua brass worked much better, with only a barely visible bulge at the base. Unfortunately I don't have any Nosler 280AI brass to measure, but their 22-250 brass is about .004" larger diameter at the base than Remington and Winchester.

That was a very grown up reply...

And......what exactly did you expect?

But, to be a good sport in jest....

Yes, I admit it, I exagerated a little to make a point that some people just DONT LIKE SLOP in chambers! ;)

And yet, you seem to know me so well!

Look, it's really great going tit-for-tat with you but seriously dude, this is lame....

Point is, if you can get 40-50 even 100 reloads out of your brass from a sloppy chamber.....more power to you. I for one (and apparently the OP as well) dont really care for it. In building a precision rifle that will cost a few thousand dollars I intend to compete with and run hard, I really wont tolerate it actually. But, that is my personal preference. And, even though you thought it out enough to call me on a statement that was not meant in all seriousness to be an actual FACT but just as a point of jest to these modern times, you expect me to reply to your question to your satisfaction?

No Sir, I will not!

There could have been any number of ways you could have given your .02 cents to my post, but the way you chose was a little insulting......so, either you intended it to be insulting, or perhaps your just totally clueless about how to understand another persons preferences!

But, hey.......I digress. Lets keep it light hearted since we are all shooters and should get along.........you shoot your gun, and I'll shoot mine (when I get a tighter reamer made)! ;D
