Was thinking about building a 28 nosler rifle
Gunwerks action with a proof research carbon barrel.
Anyone have any input on the 28 nosler?
Gunwerks actions?
Are the proof research barrels worth the money? Planing on the sendero Contour 28” length.

Set it up for 180s and H1000 or Retumbo. A lot of guys have poor performance on game with the 195. Looks great on paper though. Better yet, look at a 30 Nosler.

Reading Ryan Pierce's experience with the 28 Nosler then moving to the 300 Norma Mag, I think the 30 caliber looks pretty impressive. Obviously with the 300 PRC in the picture as well, there's another option too. The advantage in the Norma would be better brass if you reload. If not, maybe the PRC or Nosler makes the most sense. Then Norma offers factory options also. Looking at the 3 options above, it's really a preference thing if going to a 30 caliber cartridge. If your looking at a choice between the 26 Nosler and 28 Nosler for an Elk rifle or a rifle for LR steel or target shooting beyond 1000 yards, I'd say the 28 betters the 26.

The 28 was one of the most solid rifles i have had for just showing up, ranging, dialing, and hitting the 1kyd plate. It was a laser. The only down side is the 195 just did not end up being the killing bullet we really wanted it to be. For long range elk, a 30 will just do more damage, and even better a .338. The 30 and 338 will have quite a bit more recoil however. Remember, its a killing rifle, stop looking at ballistic charts and reading advertisements, pick a bullet that you know has a good track record for reliable kills, then the case to drive it the speed you need. The best hunting rifles hold their tune in changing weather, so pick a stable powder and do not worry about the extra 100 fps you could gain with a double base or ball powder that will go out of tune when a front comes through. A 30 caliber with H1000, good bullets and brass is my preference for an elk rifle.

Alex is correct. The 30 is better for long range elk and tunability. I have built several hundred 28 noslers as a one man shop. At this point in time I have zero 28 noslers on the books to build. They are all 30-28 noslers or 300 norma/norma improved for long range hunting big game. The 30-28 is one of the easiest cartridges to tune with a 215 berger and h1000. 3050-3100 fps and it will drive tacks. 86-87 gr of h1000 will put a 215 berger into 1/4 moa or better no problem. I managaed a 1.5" group at 950 yds last time I took mine out. For guys wanting a little more speed the 300 norma improved starts off where the 30-28 noslers tops out. My current lightweight norma improved setup is pushing a 230 berger at 3030 fps with a mild load of VV N570. Low single digit es and consistent bughole accuracy. My 215 berger load is 3200 fps and shoots lights out also. In my 30-28 or 300 norma improved rifles that weigh 10lbs with optics I have no issue spotting impacts at 400 yds off the bipod with my scope at 25x. The vast majority of the time I can watch my vapor trail go down to the target. The ADG brass for the 30-28 is way better than nosler brass. Primer pocket holds up substantially longer. The lapua brass for the norma is the toughest brass Ive ever seen. Even with warm loads a 100 pieces of brass would last several barrels. I have a piece of brass with 18 firings on it. 14 of them were with a 230 berger at 3100 fps with retumbo in a 26" barrel. At 18 warm firings the primer pocket is still tight and is damn near like new.

As to your original question on whether Proof carbon barrels are worth the money it depends on what the rifle will be used for. If hiking a bunch with the rifle then they are worth it as the carbon sendero contour is 13 oz lighter than a fluted #5 contour steel barrel. I have proof carbons on several of my personal rifles and they shoot lights out. Also in my opinion 28" isn't necessary for a hunting rifle as the added length is a pain when a brake is put on. Makes it tough to fit in scabbards and other gun cases.
