28 Nosler and H570 Powder??

I'm helping a friend get his 28 Nosler up and running, and It's quite a challenge to create anything to feed it. I scored a partial can of H1000 from another friend and had very good luck with some low-end starter loads with Speer 160's. I loaded up twenty shells at 177 gr. and took the thing out for break-in and sight in. After a few sighters and adjustments, cleaning between shots, I ripped of a three shot group of about 3/8". Put the brake on and shot a couple more, and they opened up to a little over an inch with the same POI.

Rifle is a brand new Browning Hells Canyon, and is built to be a pretty peachy hunting rifle.

But--- There is only enough H1000 left for another dozen shells, and around here almost ALL powder is unobtanium. I've got two hundred ADG brass, 20 Hornady brass, butt-load of mag primers, (all brands) and no powder that I find on any load data..

Soooooo--- I get to digging in jd's Powder Museum, and find some cans of OLD H570. Two are partials, and one still sealed with the metal cap. The opened ones are sweet and clean smelling, and in very good condition, I'll assume the sealed one is as well. I know that this powder is at least in the ballpark for speed and energy, but I doubt there is any data published for this modern cartridge.

Have any of you guys used this old power for this cartridge, or any other for that matter. Would I be crazy to try working up a load with it? I did find data for it in my old Speer #8 Manual for 7 RemMag. (75 grains behind 175gr. bullet Max load)

Hope someone can give me reassurance here. jd

WOO-HOO, we're having some fun now!

"H-570. Very slow burning extruded powder designed for Magnum Rifle cartridges. No longer in production. According to Speer Manual #8 it has about the same burning rate as Hodgdon 870."

Take this worth a grain of salt as I have no definitive data to share with you. You can be on a slippery slope with old powders and no known current data.

That is really an old can.of powder, probably WWII surplus sold in the 60s. I used to have a lot of it and 870 in those containers and that is about what it used to cost. I used it in a custom .338-.378 and it was ok but nothing special. It was a dirty powder.
I would go with the newer slow powders of which there are many. Loads in the old Handloader magazine had losds using it as did the old Hodgdon loading manuals.

I guess my proof reader was on break when I hit the"send" button. That load of H1000 was 77 grains not 177.

I guess I was hoping that SOMEONE may have tried this powder in the 28 or anything else. I wouldn't be considering it except it is the ONLY powder I've got that is in the zone, and no business around here has any powder except black powder subs.

I appreciate you guys responding with the info you suggested.

I've gotta say that those old metal cans have kept powder in great shape for fifty years or so. I've got several other types from the same era, and have no problem using them. jd

If you wasnt so far away id give ya some 8133 that is 28nos magical ferry dust pushin a 197 3000 with small pressure sighns but the pressure sighns are goin away little by little because of throat erosion. Let me tell ya the fun youll have when you get that 28 dialed in 5 1/2 mills to a thousand

This is a friends rifle, and I'm pretty much liking it. It's a hunting rifle built just like I like them. I just put this Vortex on it, and it's not exactly my thing, but it seems pretty nice. I think I'm gonna have to read the instructions on this one.

It's about a two pound scope, and with the brake, recoil might not be that bad.
I just need more powder. Also been thinking of the Hornady VLD 160ish bullets. jd
