25 caliber missing??

I am a quarterbore shooting with 6 25 caliber rifles in my safe. I am puzzled why there is not mention of the .257 bore in any of these forums. While not a benchrester, I have hunted with 25's for years and have no problem with performance.

Am I missing something about the 25's?

My wife shoots a 257 Weatherby and we like it. There are threads here on .257, just do a search. I just don't think they are as popular as some of the other rounds that make the leader boards. I also don't think there are as top grade bullets available because of it. For instance, I shoot Berger and there are only 2 choices for the 25cal but there are 13 for 6MM and 6 for the 6.5MM.

Nothing wrong with the grand .257 bore, just quality match type bullets are missing. That simple.. It is unfortunate, but it is what it is...

As said, very limited choice of match grade bullets available. 250 Savage chambering, done with a hand lapped barrel & all the tricks & it was a disappointment. Pulled the barrel, replaced with another 6mm & never looked back.

I had a 25-300wsm great shooter and a great round for deer just didnt like the slim selection of slugs. It only really liked the 115gr vlds but got a little pricey paying 45.00 a 100 so had to get rid of it.

If you have a barrel like that again you can install an adjsutable barrel weight on the muzzle and dial in any load you want.

I bought up some of their old 95 grain flat based match bullets; they shoot terrific. I've gotten some pretty amazing groups with them in my 25/06 Ackley.

It's just a big popularity contest: the other calibers get more attention, new bullet designs, new firearms. The manufactures are making other calibers more standard, while pushing others into obsolescence; I guess to reduce tooling costs.

I remember Berger getting on the forum a few years ago and spoke of designs of new .25 cal bullets for long range; maybe they were only gauging interest. Nothing has came to fruition, plans change. Probably not enough interest from the mainstream.

I recently picked up a used 25 BR, it came with some berger 82's that I see are no longer made. I think I'm going to add this rifle to my P-dog rotation, and am looking to try the new sierra 70 gr blitzkings and hornady 75 V max. I just shot the new 25 yesterday and got a .237 group in switchy conditions. I look forward to taking it to the dog towns!

the 257 roberts and the improved version are around, but the bullet selection problem is also. for whatever reason, 11 years ago i had a 257 roberts chambered using a match grade douglas barrel. it shoots sierra's 100 gr matchking through a 1/4 in hole at 100 yards all day using rel 17. shot at oakridge 600 yds years ago and won f class both times. berger's 115 gr vlds shoot equally well using vv 165. barrel life should be very long. make norma cases by necking down 7x57 mauser and fireforming. does really bad things to ghogs.

1. It is not just the lack of quality bullets, it is twist rate limitation you find in 25 caliber rifles. Every factory gun you find will be 1:10. The 25 caliber should be able to handle up to 140 grain bullets, but nobody is making rifles with faster twist rates. Since nobody is selling faster twist rate rifles, the heavier bullets are never produced.

2. I have wondered why the folks that made the forum folders on here completely skipped over 25 calibler in their range of folders. You go directly from 6mm as the upper end of one folder to 6.5mm being the bottom end of the next.

If you have a couple of extra grand sitting around you can have some bullet dies made up too; I've thought about it.

Hey that's got a nice ring to it FlyBuster Competition Bullets®. I better put a rights reserved symbol so nobody takes my new name!

The Detsch 6mm bullet dies I bought have to pay for themselves first. There must be some demand for 25 caliber because some well known bullet makers like JLK, BIB, Fowlers are/were building them. It may not catch on and promote the 25 caliber in competition, but could certainly be a niche market for those of us with 25 tack drivers.

It would be cool, and bullet making is fun, just very time consuming.

I am like you I like the name Flybuster Comp Bullets....I build 30's and have thought about 25's myself. I would also buy some from you if you decided to build some. I love my 1/4 caliber rifles. J4 offers a 1.200
jacket should be able to build up to 140's on it. Double radius bullets would be awesome.
