Barrel Burners

In my 6.5x284 I have been shooting 55.5 grains of N165, 142 smk (molied) in a WW case. The barrel has been set back once at 1200 rounds and currently has 1800+ rounds thru it and it shoots great off a sling. I believe that it is due to the N165.

FWIW,
Steve

Day light savings time or 30 minutes ago in 2014 post!?? Nothing has changed heat is still a barrel's enemy! Some cartridges are worse than others. Keep that barrel cool as possible but not at the cost of winning. Great score and hot barrel may equal a win!

People have asked me why I take 3-4 similar rifles out shooting Rockchucks here in SW Idaho.
It's because I do not fire more than 3 or four shots out of one. They never get H-O-T!

The other question you should ask (yourself) is how often you go shooting; be it range testing, competition, or live varmint shooting. In 95% of the group here you will spend more on gas and meals (and entry fees) than a new barrel every year or so. If less, the cartridge choice may come into consideration.
Then, just buy a heavy barrel in 223 and replace it every five years...
