25 06 in a 30 06

Someone had reloaded and resized the 30 06 brass down to 25 06, then reloaded them for a friend. He shot 2 sighting in. He said it didn't have much recoil. Then I noticed split necks. No harm done. It could have been worse. Never reload for someone else, never shoot someones reloads.

I was reloading 45 acp using 4 gr of powder. I always eyeball with a flashlight and found a double dip. Always eyeball your charges. It can happen especially when you get distracted.

be safe.

As long as the cartridge have the correct headspace, case length, but different dia bullets the smaller can be fired in the larger bore, splitting necks is a likely consequence. But the 270 in a 30-06 is a different animal the 270 has a longer brass case than the 30-06, pushing brass down into the bore...depending on the chamber and leade of the 30-06 it could be a real pressure spike as the 270 is fired the 30-06 chamber with a short throat. I have fired on purpose after selling the 7 mm Rem in mag in 338 Win mag on purpose as it headspaces off the wonderful belt that everyone seems to hate, and fireformed them perfectly, as a low velocity inaccurate bullet exits the muzzle.

I load for an older neighbor who is having trouble with the recoil from his Ruger 77 308. I found Hodgdon info on reduced loads for 308 and other rifle chamberings. If i didn't load for him, he could not shoot. Charge ONE case, seat ONE bullet , go to next round.

“never shoot someones reloads.”
Absolutely correct.
An extreme example that’s interesting and 100% fact, take a few seconds to look up and read about
Operation Eldest Son.
It will give you quite a different idea about shooting anything you didn’t reload.
