There is no reason at all not to do that and it makes a lot of sense to let people without a bundle grab up a low cost solution to "get into the game". If they have the money for a custom rig, I recommend the .243 Ackley to give you a little more speed for cheating wind.Thoughts?
Thanks.
There's no law that says you can't shot a 6mm in 1000Y F-Class competition. And it might make sense for you initially if you're already shooting that caliber.
But if you're starting with a clean piece of paper, and it sounds like you might, then to be competitive, you really really need to be focusing on a 7mm. Folks can shoot good scores with lesser calibers. But if you look at the top shooters at any major 1000Y event, say the Berger SWNs for instance, 90% or more will be shooting some sort of 7mm.
That's my opinion. Good luck!
Back when F Class first kicked off here in Australia (1996 ish), the 22-250 with 80 grainers was popular but the odd shot got lost with bullets down the spotting disc, so some moved to the 243AI with 107's and it became very popular, I wore out about 4-5 barrels before I moved onto the 6.5. With a good barrel and shooter the 243 can probably keep up with the 7mm's at the longs but so can a Dasher with probably double the barrel life. The most I ever got was around 1200 competitive rounds. From memory I was using around 42-43 grains of 4350 with 107's.Yes, just getting started. I am very aware of the strength of the 7mm, especially the success the .284 win is having. I would like to start with something with less recoil to learn proper shooting Techniques.
Looking at Ballistics.............a Berger 105 hybrid @ 3300fps does pretty well at 1k?
I would run it with a 1-7.5" twist, 105-115 grain bullet, H1000 or 7828sc, 30" barrel.
If I had it all to do again, I'd have started with less ballistics. It took me a long time to get my wind game to where it is now. A 6mm can compete with the 7mm's when driven by someone that calls the wind very well or shoots in benign conditions regularly.
It is likely that you will wear out 1 or 2 barrels in long range F-Open before you get good at calling the wind, setting up at the line, and making decisions. Why not run a lighter caliber, so the recoil doesn't interfere with your learning?
It is up to you. What do you want to get out of your first barrel?
RL-26 will almost certainly get you 3,300 with a 105. Good stuff in the straight .243 or the AI.Thanks! My thought also............slower powders. The fastest powder I may try will be N160. May look at R26 also?
My hope is the slower powders and moly coated bullets may get barrel life up to 1500 rounds???
Go with a 7" or 7.5" twist with 110 Sierra's or 115 DTAC's at 3100 and you have the same performance as a 7mm Berger 180 Hybrid at 2800. The 6mm's have come a long way in the last year.Down the road, Ultimately, I want to shoot .284 Win for 1k, and maybe all my 600yd.

Hope so ... I had him build one for me that I am setting up now.Can the success John Widden has with .243 carry over into F class?
Can .243 Win be as accurate as 6dasher or 6brx?
