.243 Win for 1000yd F-class

Thoughts?

Thanks.
There is no reason at all not to do that and it makes a lot of sense to let people without a bundle grab up a low cost solution to "get into the game". If they have the money for a custom rig, I recommend the .243 Ackley to give you a little more speed for cheating wind.

I've thought about building one in a .243, also. I agree with Randy on the Ackley version. Not so much on the speed portion, but to save on trimming brass so often. All of the .243s I've loaded for have needed a lot of trimming. That shoulder angle allows for a lot of growth. With that much case capacity, I'd personally look at the 110 Sierra, 115 Berger, or 115 DTAC. Throat it accordingly and have enough twist. Good luck!!

P.S. I'd buy the reamer. You will be changing barrels more frequently than most other cartridges. It'll make your life easier in the long run.

First off...I love the 243W...All 4 barrels I have owned..I'd say yes to AI version...Trimming sucks...If you like to shoot...They don't last very long..I still miss my first 243W barrel..it went 8 to 9 hundred & it went bad fast using IMR4064..These last 3, I used H4350..Somewhat better life span, accuracy was just ok good enough for LR steel varmints...That said, this new 6MM tube is a 6mmBRX..If I was not such a cheap skate it would have been the Dasher..your mileage may vary..mike in ct

There's no law that says you can't shot a 6mm in 1000Y F-Class competition. And it might make sense for you initially if you're already shooting that caliber.

But if you're starting with a clean piece of paper, and it sounds like you might, then to be competitive, you really really need to be focusing on a 7mm. Folks can shoot good scores with lesser calibers. But if you look at the top shooters at any major 1000Y event, say the Berger SWNs for instance, 90% or more will be shooting some sort of 7mm.

That's my opinion. Good luck!

Yes, just getting started. I am very aware of the strength of the 7mm, especially the success the .284 win is having. I would like to start with something with less recoil to learn proper shooting Techniques.

Looking at Ballistics.............a Berger 105 hybrid @ 3300fps does pretty well at 1k?

Back when F Class first kicked off here in Australia (1996 ish), the 22-250 with 80 grainers was popular but the odd shot got lost with bullets down the spotting disc, so some moved to the 243AI with 107's and it became very popular, I wore out about 4-5 barrels before I moved onto the 6.5. With a good barrel and shooter the 243 can probably keep up with the 7mm's at the longs but so can a Dasher with probably double the barrel life. The most I ever got was around 1200 competitive rounds. From memory I was using around 42-43 grains of 4350 with 107's.

If I had it all to do again, I'd have started with less ballistics. It took me a long time to get my wind game to where it is now. A 6mm can compete with the 7mm's when driven by someone that calls the wind very well or shoots in benign conditions regularly.

It is likely that you will wear out 1 or 2 barrels in long range F-Open before you get good at calling the wind, setting up at the line, and making decisions. Why not run a lighter caliber, so the recoil doesn't interfere with your learning?

It is up to you. What do you want to get out of your first barrel?

I would run it with a 1-7.5" twist, 105-115 grain bullet, H1000 or 7828sc, 30" barrel.

Thanks! My thought also............slower powders. The fastest powder I may try will be N160. May look at R26 also?

My hope is the slower powders and moly coated bullets may get barrel life up to 1500 rounds???

You are saying exactly what my thoughts where to wanting to start small and with .243 Win

By starting out with a smaller caliber, I'm hoping to learn the wind and quit "chasing the spotter".

Learn proper technique with the rifle tracking with a low recoil rifle. With less upset, get in the habit of "staying on the rifle"

Down the road, Ultimately, I want to shoot .284 Win for 1k, and maybe all my 600yd matches?

I've got a lot to learn and I appreciate everyone's advice!

RL-26 will almost certainly get you 3,300 with a 105. Good stuff in the straight .243 or the AI.

I'm in the process of putting together a Remington 700, Kreiger 1-8 twist, H1000 and Sierra 107's. First time trying such an animal, I'll try and keep everyone posted!

Go with a 7" or 7.5" twist with 110 Sierra's or 115 DTAC's at 3100 and you have the same performance as a 7mm Berger 180 Hybrid at 2800. The 6mm's have come a long way in the last year.

You F-Open shooters who want to learn to read wind get a 308 and shoot F-TR. ;) Hey, barrels last 4000 rounds. :p
