.243 Load using RE-17 and 85 gr Sierra

I need to do some loading for a 243 using an 85 gr Sierra HPBT Gameking. I have about 4 pounds of Re-17 that is not getting any use and would like to use this for this project.
The Alliant book that I have gives 43.7 gr for a max load.

Does anyone have a load that shoots accurately with this bullet/powder combo?

Kmart, different bbl's, chambers, bbl length, brass, powder lots primers, etc all alter the preformance of loads from gun to gun. another persons load can be dangerous in your rig.

my recomendation for my experiance is to take the recomended load, drop it 5% seat to jump .010 jump and then with my rig, begin working the load up, keeping all consistant but the powder, .3gr at a time, you should hit a sweet spot if there is one for that powder in your rig. I often go beyond the sweet spot to the point of mildpressure signs just to see the load range available.

I can't speak to the specific caliber and bullet you want to load with Re-17, but I can tell you that Re-17 in my 6MM Remington and 7MM WSM has given me excellent results. I bet you will find that it works well in your 243 also, I haven't had a chance to try it in my 243 yet. Good luck....

42.5 Rx-17 w/85gr bullet shuld be a plenty....Roger

I did the"search" method changing the powder .2 grain at a time and you hit the nail on the head. I ended up at 42.5 gr of RE-17 and the rifle shot them into a .475 group out of a bone stock 700 remington adl (1970 vintage).
It sounds like you had similar results.

K-mart...you are very welcome....Im always glad to help...ive shot em(.243's) a lil bit over the yrs....I cant give much load data anymore becuase of the Culver restriction on here.....I havnt weighd a powder charge for several yrs.......that was a conversion from powder density charts that I use....they are "usualllllyyyy" pretty close....Im glad you are gettin your rifle dialed in.....with the big bullets 85 up to 105-6-7 dont overlook Rx-22 either.!!!!.....e-mail me if you need any further data....main thing is stay near max loads and jam em at first ,,and then if not ,,good jump em a lot (.040-.080") right off the bat....and use lots of neck tension with these modern double base powders.....Roger
