22lr Action discussion

Jim yes you found Kenny, one of the very good Gunsmiths working with small bore rifles. I message back and forth with Kenny maybe four or five years ago? concerning tuners. I got into small bore benchrest rifles by building PCP air rifle silencers, which flowed over into 22LR and tuners. After a deep dive into the history of tuners and learning from Bill Calfee and Tony Purdy, I'm certain no rimfire rifle is complete without one! Thanks for the link,

This is basically the question that got me to start this thread. While I was taking my time collecting the parts to build an unlimited class benchrest rifle I purchased a steel barrel b14r to test rests, ammo, get setup in ARA etc. Turns out the b14r i got is extremely accurate. I did some of my own work to the bolt, added a jewel trigger, made a tuner. The stock really doesn't need anything as it has an aluminum mini chassis built in and is super rigid. The only thing I didn't care for was the color, so I painted mine red. I see no reason right now for me to build or purchase another rifle because this one shoots in the .2's every range session. would I do any better than that with a full custom or building my own? Maybe, but I don't think any Smith could guarantee it. The way I feel now is I would stick with the Bergara action and maybe rebarrel it in the future, but I really don't see any negatives with the ignition or design. I have a feeling now that they are legal in ARA people are going to see what the b14r platform is capable of. Have fun,

You got a good one then. I know of two people that bought B14’s for factory class and have already sold them. Mine shoots close to my 457’s but falls a little short with every lot of ammo I’ve tried.8B7900E4-FCA4-4378-AC18-3D51CEDDA5EC.jpeg
 
Tony I like your logic on the pieces that make a rifle. But don't you have to have a barrel that has a known ability to produce a good group.
 
Dusty is right about ignition.I need a lefty. A CZ rabbit hole is much smaller.Mostly DIY.Shim the CZ bolt with triggershims.com bolt shims $14 and Yo Dave spring.My shooting partner had some shims left over, he put one in my bolt,did the most to cut down flyers in my $600 Rh CZ457 varmint, now shoots like Appalachian s Cz, with more than one ammo now,averages 6-7 of 10 rds on a 14"round plate @400m. I've owned 2 LH B14's ,got my money back on both,but not parts and ammo.Bought a third LH B14r,a barreled action carbon,Monday from member here.My B14r rabbit hole has a KRG Bravo,Jewel trigger,3 mags,Murphy Precision mount and two ammo boxes full of Eley match and Lapua.My range is 40m- 400m ,153m seems to seperate the herd.We'll see,

I guess some other info I can put out there is over at Mr Calfee's website I had a thread and he was helping me get my rig accurized. Tony may have seen a thread over that I'm not sure? but that was also a great help getting me a jump start on benchrest shooting.

FYI... All my targets were shot on the factory ARA Target which may help explain the inflated aggregate. I was going to shoot factory class this year but the work I've done to my rifle bolt I don't believe I will qualify? that's what got all this started and considering rebuilding this rifle into an open class setup.

He must be the guy that blew up balloons and stuck them on barrels to evaluate them. World Class? Give me a list of present day winners that use him.
 
Sure looks like old Calpee ain't doing much in your list. Richard Gorham out of Okla. has a pretty good following. I think Calp[ee is over the hill. You would have done better posting matches from 2016 and earlier.
 
Well I'm rather new to small bore benchrest and I've heard about some of the battles in the forums and I'm not about to be part of it, but Mr. Calfee helped me out when I asked, all his information was correct, and I couldn't find any flaws in his information for his rifles.

2022 UL A-Line champion shoots a Calfee rifle. Two guns in the top 10 in the 2022 ARA UL National match. Im not a fan myself. I won’t discount him. He was the first to do some things. He rubs a lot of people the wrong way because Calfee’s biggest fan is Calfee.

Also, there are a few smiths on the list that are associated with Calfee. so maybe his name is not prevalent like it was, but he had some influence on some of those rifles.
