New Rimx BBL action

Lee,

Yes, Mike Ross, Jeff Madison, and I spent considerable time investigating the potential benefits from indexing barrels. The majority of our testing showed a slight improvement in precision when the bore curves were clocked to 6 or 12, but it wasn't statistically significant. I often wrestle with myself as to whether it's another one of those crumbs worth pursuing or if it's better to concentrate on those variables that are already proven to enhance performance.

As regards coned chambers being less stable than traditional, I'm not sure I can answer that. Maybe "Hoop Stress" calculations in conjunction with an FEA would provide some clarity, but considering the relatively low pressures we deal with in RF, I don't personally feel coned chambers would be less stable and there are a lot of great shooting rifles that utilize them for one reason or another and not just for indexing. That being said, some cones are designed poorly and do cause problems.

If you do decided to investigate indexing farther, I have one suggestion. Based on the assumption that 6 or 12 is the ideal clock position, design your testing around using only 2 positions such as 12 and 3, 12 and 9, 6 and 3, etc. It'll save you hundreds if not thousands of rds in any attempt at finding something close to statistical significance vs trying to shoot all the way around the clock.

Landy

Landy Thanks for the suggestion on where to start. now if I try this that's another story.

flatlander, that's a gorgeous rifle!

Mike didn't really do any RFBR rifles, but I remember attending an ARA match in Lincoln many years ago where I believe Mike had an acquaintance who showed up with maybe a prone stocked rifle with a pencil thin barrel and a mini bi-pod attached to it. It was a real oddity and without a doubt the smallest diameter barrel I've ever seen at a BR match other than a shooter from Houston who was shooting next to me in Waco, TX a couple of years ago with I believe a factory CZ American.

It's been way too long ago to remember the details, but I remember visiting with Mike about it and he confirmed he'd barreled it and/or built it. I seem to remember being surprised it shot as well as it did and I was impressed.

I see you're a neighbor from Kansas and I can't help but be curious if it was possibly you. Probably not, but like I said....curious.

Landy

Landy,
Nope, it warn't me - the only BR match I've ever shot was the Colorado State 1000yr BR Champs at Byers in June of 2007. I didn't get the completed 52D back from Doan until June of 2011. I never met Mike Ross in person, but started following his bbl indexing thread on German Salazar's old "Florida Smallbore Shooting" forum on Delphi back when. I bought one of his 11 MOA scope rails for an Anschutz 1611 from him, and had him do the Broughton on the 52D. Wish I'd have had the opportunity to meet him... BTW, I'm out in the western end of the state, about 88mi from the Colorado state line. If you ever have reason to get out this way, drop me a line and perhaps we can meet up for lunch somewhere.

that's a pretty piece of wood..

USMCDOC, Thanks for the complement. I picked the blank from a selection of five photos from Cecil Fredi in Las Vegas. He sent photos of both sides of all five blanks in the price range I'd specified, and I went for that one. Doan Trevor doesn't usually do sporter stocks, but when I showed the blank to him, he was curious enough about what was inside to take the bait and do the project for me. He also did a very beautiful prone stock for one of my BAT 3L rifles by finishing a rough duplicated stock from Steve & Shirley McGee, who insisted that I come to their place to pick out a blank from their stockpile (no pun intended). They were among the first friends I met when I started shooting XC HP in 1998, and I'm blessed to have them both & Doan work on my rifle projects. The top photo is the BAT 3L 6.5x47 Lapua prone rifle (I did the bbl work & machined the scope rail/iron sight base) & the 52D together; 2nd pic is of the blank the McGees used to duplicate the BAT's stock. I thought that blank looked nice, but was really pleased with the way it turned out. I'm a sucker for a nice piece of English walnut...

Dennis, thank you so much for sharing! I enjoyed reading that!

Beautiful rifles! Doan does excellent work!

Dennis (Flatlander) has built some really nice rifles, and I was telling someone just yesterday that I would trust him to install a barrel for me! He, like the majority of the shooters we've met, is a really good guy!

Steve, you are a great person as well.. just so that you know!

Dittos on the McGees Doc - I missed a chance to shoot with them yesterday at the KSRA Spring Warm-up Mid Range (4x600) match yesterday, and regret not traveling the 170mi to do so. This 'pandemic' thing can't end a moment too soon to suit me...

Steve - I hope to see you & Shirley at a match before too long. Take it easy, and God bless!

holstil, You're absolutely correct about Doan. To call him a craftsman doesn't do his skills & patience justice - he's an artist. My photos don't come close to showing the very nice work he did on 'shadowing' the ejection port, action gas escape port, cheekpiece, etc. He even found an antique steel Winchester buttplate to use on the 52s stock, and did a perfect job of inletting the convex 'V' at the top to the butt of the stock. He also made the pistol grip cap & forend tip of some figured bastogne walnut - to really appreciate this stock, it has to be seen in person, preferably outdoors in good light. I may not shoot this rifle a lot, but it's a precious treasure to me, and every time I take it out of its case and handle it, I think of Doan, and am thankful for having had the opportunity to meet & get to know him.

Thanks Dennis,

I didn't go last year, but I shot the ARA State Tournament at Byers the previous 3 or 4 years. The main reason I started shooting that match was because Lones Wigger always shot it and he's a lotta fun to be around.

Usually I'd travel down to McCook, meet up with a couple of shooters there, and we'd take Hwy 36. Probably pretty damn close to where your location is.
