22br vs 22-250AI

I'm thinking of building one or the other. Just wondering how either cartridge did and what the pros and cons are. I'm open to all information and opions. Id like to push the 75gr amax out to 1000 yards for metal gongs and some groundhogs.

Thanks Hillbilly

There is a nice article in Precision Shooting this month on
the 22-6mm.Lonnie Hummel of Hornady die making fame
has been shooting varmints and 1000yd targets with
this cartridge since the early 70's.While not your two listed choices the 22-6mm is a good choice for 1000yds.Of the 2 you listed I would pick the 22-250AI and use the new Lapua brass. :)
Don't get me wrong I love any cartridge based on the BR but for 1000yds I think you need a little more horsepower.

Look at Gun of the Week article by Clint Greenwood using the 22Br in the Tubb 2000 rifle. The 75 AMAX should teach you to be very good at reading the wind at 1000 yards!

Not even a decision for me, Hillbilly ... I don't think there is a 22-anything that will match the BR for the amount of powder it uses. Low recoil, extreme accuracy, easier on barrels ... and I would have shoot from mountain top to mountain top to get out to 1,000 yards ... and even then I think the 22 BR would be a competitor.

there is no question in my mind, the 22br at 3100 from a 26" tube will drop 60" more and blow 10" more than 22-250ai at 3400fps.

the retained energy is more also, for hogs etc.

22 br is a great one but if wind, 600+ yards is a factor, go 22-250ai

I would be looking to 22BR simply because of the increased barrel life and other advantages offered by the 22BR. But if you need more speed than can be had by the 22BR, than you can always go 22 Dasher and up the ante a bit. Closer to what the 22-250AI will do, and still be easier on barrels as well.

Hillbilly,

I have had both. The 22.250AI is very flat shooting, but it sucks on barrel life. The 22BR is a great round, barrel life is much better. Another fun round is the 223. I have shot 4.5" clays at 1000 yds, with a factory Savage.

22BRX/Dasher

I just can't help thinking that if the 22BR and 22/250 were both made commercially available at the same time then the 22/250 would be dead in the water, they weren't, so the rest is history, as they say.
The only limiting factor to all the BR cases is being magazine fed and even that can be overcome.

Whatever the 22/250 or AI can do the 22BR or Dasher can do equally as well but for less.

I re-barreled my factory 22-250 Stealth, to a .22-6XC. I was thinking of improved, but my gunsmith already had the reamer on hand. It's set up for 75-80 grain A-Max and JLK bullets. The only two problems I have; at 500 yard varmint matches, is the ability to see the punched holes and yes, compensate for wind direction.

Thanks for all the other caliber ideas guys! Guess I have some more research to do on all the others to see which will work best for me

Thanks Again Hillbilly

I think you would do well either way. I had a 22-250 1:8 twist built for long range prarie dogs and it was a really great round out to 1000yds, 3230fps with 80SMK's were real close to 6mm 107SMK's at 3000fps. The problem was after about 800rounds the bbl needed set back. I had it rechambered to 22br and it is more accurate than the 22-250 ever was. It is about 100fps slower than the 22-250 was but I don't think that will make much difference. I would have liked to seen what the 22-250 would have done if Lapua brass had been available them. Good luck.
