.223 New build and a shout out

Just wanted to post some details and some pics of a new build. It's a .223 F/TR rifle for mid range (300 to 600 yds) practice, some competition, and all around fun. Also, wanted to put up another shout out to Greg at Southern Precision Rifles (Bugholes.com) for another great Bartlein barrel chambered by him.

the details:

1) Savage Target Action
2) Bartlein .223, 1 in 7.7 twist, 28 inch, heavy varmint like contour, free bore is .125" or so I believe
3) XLR Industries Element chassis (love these things)
4) Murphy Precision SS 10 moa rail
5) Sightron 10-50x glass

took it out yesterday for some seating depth testing and load testing. primarily focusing on seating depth. bullet is the awesome Berger 80.5 gr Fullbore.

All 5 shots at 100 yds.

needless to say, I am again very pleased. this the second .223 barrel i have gotten from Greg, and they both have been outstanding shooters.

on the lands and .010" off look the best. Powders are H4895 and IMR 8208 XBR

I am also in deep sh.t for taking the pic on my wife's kitchen table

Swadiver, Congradulations on your new build. Those are great groups, is 23 grains of h4895 usually your accuracy node? Did you and your Smith think it would take the 7.7 twist to work with the 80.5s over a 8 twist barrel? Anyway thanks for showing it to us and how accurate it is.

Good looking rig and very nice shooting.

My wife gives me crap when I do things like that on her furniture as well. That's why most pics of my guns are taken in front of the washer/dryer.

Is that the 3 screw action? Trigger and weight?

thanks for the comments. as regard the questions, i ended up with the 7.7 twist because i wanted a Bartlein and i believe that is the twist commonly available from them in place of a 8 twist. i think either a straight 8 or this 7.7 is no issue for the 80 gr class of bullets.

the 23 gr of H4895 has been outstanding in both of my Bartlein 7.7 twist .223 barrels. i did find another node up around 24 grs with of course a lot more velocity, but i decided to take it easier on the brass and barrel and stick with the lower node. the 22.3 grs of IMR 8208 XBR gives about the same velocity as the 23 grs of H4895

at this point, my "honey do" list got bigger.

it is a 3 screw action, but the XLR chassis has a mag well cutout, so you can only utilize the front and rear action screws. i have never found that to be an issue in any of the rifles of any caliber i have used the XLR chassis with. the trigger is a standard Savage Target Accutrigger

thanks for the comments

i found that my current working load with this bullet is 23.7 grs RL15 with the bullet 20K off the lands

I tested .000" to .025" off and go the best results either on the lands or -.010" off. never tried RE-15 with this bullet, but tried Varget and ending up preferring the H4895 overall.

swadiver, where are you located? Same name on other boards? Looks like you have it dialed in time for the January Manatee match.

USMCDOC, you a JK guy?

Sorry.. but the acronym isn't sinking in.. can you let me know what it is you are typing about

Nice rig you have there. I have a 8 twist Benchmark that loves 75 Amax's and H4895. I use it for 300-600 yard f class. It will definitely hold its own on a decent weathered day, but let the winds pick up and switch then it becomes very challenging. I shoot at Camp Blanding mostly, used to shoot Malabar when I lived in Palm Beach County, also used to wear the road out from PBC to Manatees Gun Range.

We shoot F-Class at Manatee. More than a few Manatee guys go to PM to shoot F there too.
