223 Ackley bullet recommendation

Hello,

I have a 12 twist 223 Ackley and am looking for a bullet that would be considered a consistent performer across the board. I’ve been shooting 52 grain A-maxes and they shoot well, just not very consistent. If I shoot a 10 shot group at 100 yards, roughly 6 of them will be in a cloverleaf hole and the remaining 4 will be scattered ¾” from the cloverleaf.

This is with Varget powder and a trued up Rem 700 with a Lilja barrel.

Any thoughts? I am not opposed to shooting a “match” bullet out of this thing for the long range shots and prairie dogs.

Thanks.

The 52gr A-Max is a fairly accurate bullet - if you are having the problems you describe, you need to look for the cause, not another bullet.

my 223 ackley, which is similar in build to yours likes sierra blitzkings in 50 and 55 grains better than the hornadys I tried,

I am using benchmark and 8208 xbr in mine and several folks would say that H335 is "the powder" for the 223 ackley.

Give the Sierra 60 gr. HP a whirl. Shoots very well in my Son's 12tw .223 Remington and my 10tw Mini 14. The 64 grain Berger is another if you can stabilize it. Both are FB and for the short range game(to 300 yards) some prefer them. I like to work the 1.3(sometimes less) stability value to minimize any bullet balance issues that may be present. Calm down Gentlemen I'm not trying to open a "Can of Worms" here! ;)
