222 wildcats?

222 Revenge...the editor of PS owned this and claimed it shot well in his Superior BR rifle. If anyone knows where that went, I WANT TO KNOW.

Wasn't there a 22 or 222 Tomcat?? WD
Tom Gillman, gunsmith in Hot Springs Ark. Good shooter in the 60s and 70s. I can't swear that he never used the 222, but his claim to fame was the Tom Cat, basically the same thing as a Bob Cat only using a belted 224 wby case, he built quite a few of them in both 224 and 6mm, claimed it was far superior to anything else. Called it the "Tom" cat after himself.... John

I suppose you could turn the rebated rim down on a lathe
...or .223 Rem for that matter!
simple confusion, I guess!?!
I'm into the 30 Raptor now

Do you have a pic of the rifle?
I do not. He wrote about it, i kept it in my head because i research (and own several) Superiors, but he passed, his wife never returned an inquiry I made, and it was not photographed in the 2nd part of the only article I ever read in PS. I never saw the first.

so, if anyone has that issue...It was Dave brennan's gun

How does the 30 Raptor compare to the 300HAM'R from a case dimension/power volume? How do you form the brass for the 30 Raptor?

Right off the top the 300HAM'R has a longer neck, and the 300HAM'R cases can be formed from 223 brass by shortening it (cutting off portion of 223 case at the neck/shoulder junction point).

Thanks

As with all cartridges designed for AR's OAL dimensions have to be considered.
With Reeder's designs, he is given more latitude. The Raptors use full length 204 Ruger brass and are afforded more case volume.
I don't use the 300 HAM'R but have been really impressed in what I've read.
A longer neck is always a benefit for bullet seating and Reeder, I believe, changed his neck design in the Raptor line between his introduction of the 240, 257, 6.5 and his later 7mm, and 30 Raptor.
The three earliest Raptors have a standard neck length like the HAM'R, while the last two have a short, to offer expanded capacity, neck.
I hope I answered at least part of your question, lacking specific statistics.

Any wildcatting of the 222 Rem and still keeping it a .224(OP's request) other than changing the shoulder angle is pretty much a waste of money. The 222 Rem is bracketed by the .221 on one side and the 223/222 Rem Mag on the other, so faster or slower are already covered. Improvements in accuracy due to shoulder angle is most likely in the builders mind. It is really hard to improve on the original.

Neck expansion and fire-forming are processes I go through.
Thank you for the comparison of the two cartridges. I hadn't realized that the Raptor was based on the 204 Ruger case, which explains the additional case volume. The reduced neck seems to be geared toward a single shot action or bolt action.

I actually use 223 Basic from Starline when it's available, a recommendation from barrel's previous owner,
to create a slightly longer neck for more bullet support. Doesn't seem to have any adverse affect on chambering or performance since cartridge headspaces from shoulder. Although the photos depict 204 Ruger brass donor.
Recently graduated to the Encore so more diffusion of contender concentration expected.
Still whittlin' wood, tho.270 pistol.jpg
