222 to 223 ?

I'm not a Gunsmith but I think I would want the barrel set back about three turns to make sure I got a good clean up of the old chamber.

never mind I had a senior moment -its a Savage 340. looks near near , must of sit in a closet for 40 years, Ill just change the barrel

would it be possible to rechamber a 222 to 223 ?
I am not a gunsmith but I know of a least a half-dozen rifleshat have been rechambered from 222 to 223 by doing nothing more than running a 223 reamer into the 222 chamber, in every case it worked fine with no issues. It is easy to Google SAAMI specs and do a comparison of the measurements of the two cartridges.

As far as rebarreling the 340 you would be money ahead to watch for a sale and pick up a Savage, Rem, or other inexpensive rifle already chambered in 223. Rebarreling will cost more than the cost of a new inexpensivie rifle.

This depends on what degree of accuracy you are willing to accept.

Someone considering this type of conversion is most likely to have bought their .222 many years ago and had above average accuracy. That's what the .222 was noted for. Buying a $400 off the shelf .223, will not, in most cases, result in above average accuracy.

You don't get accuracy cheap. Put a new barrel on that rifle. You choose the caliber. I'd stick with the .222 but that's up to you.

My point was that it does not make much sense to rebarrel a rifle whose value is less than the cost of rebarreling it. The 340 was a low-priced entry level rifle and in todays market there are choices of rifles for $400 that will likely outshoot the 340 even after it is rebarreled.
The 340 is a poor basis to attempt to build an accurate rifle from and an even poorer basis when you consider the level of accuracy of most current entry level rifles available today.
But like you I would stay with the 222, there is not much practical difference between the 222 and the 223.

The 340 savage takes a unique tpi /od , its not your common small savage .

There are a lot of .222 Rem 700s that you still encounter around here that have been converted by my friend and gunsmith Jimmy Craig. People brought them to him and asked for a service. I hate it and he hated it but I guess we both came up in the customer is always right era.
It actually works fine and I have shot some of them. They are fine, work well. The no no's of today seem pretty rediculess. But I know this shit worked 30-40- years ago so I'm pretty sure they will work now. I can't put a number on it but we shot a ton of military .223 in them and I PERSONALY never saw a problem.
This was just at the last of viet nam and there was a shitload of ammo around. It was pretty good stuff
