Rechambering R700 in .223 to .222 rem magnum?

Hi everyone. I think I'd like to rechamber my R700V in .223 to 222 rem magnum. My question--Is there enough barrel shank to do this. The barrel is 1.230 in dia 1" in front of the recoil lug. It looks to me like I'd have to cut an inch off or mabie I can get away with just the tenon. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

I have to ask. Why go to all the trouble to gain about 5% in case capacity using a obsolete cartridge case? You can get 7-8% more by just rechambering for .223 AI and you don't have to do anything but run the AI reamer into your existing chamber.

I own 223 and 222 Rem Mag rifles.

As much as I love my 222 Rem Mag, unless there was a pressing reason, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a good justification to rechamber a good 223.

If really intent on it, I'd probably remove the 223 tube, sell it off (if it's fresh), and rebarrel with a new aftermarket barrel in 222 Rem Mag.

Thanks fellas-- I was thinking of rechambering this rifle because it doesn't shoot accurately at all. It looks to me like the chamber is cut very crooked and I think this is the reason it doesn't shoot well. Really the more I think about it I don't think you can straiten out a crooked chamber so I prob need to set it back far enough to get rid of the old chamber and there isn't enough shank to do that. It's got very low round count and I wanted to see how it would do chambered right but I guess it's not gonna happen.

If you were going to re-chamber to a larger diameter cartridge case, you might straighten it out with a boring bar before chambering.

If you're rechambering a crooked chamber to a significantly larger size (such as a 308 based cartridge)

Exactly. This would be a time when you should definitely prebore. --Jerry

Ok Thanks for that info fellas. It does make sense. I suppose the 222 rem magnum is not bigger enough to do that and of coarse the bolt face is .223 head size so I can't go to 308 base cartridge. Is it okay to use a 1.23 dia shoulder on the barrel at recoil lug. Thanks
