222- Best powder for 50 grain bullets

Shot this great caliber for a number of years. There are several powders that work well with it but the one I found to be the most consistent is IMR 4198 with 50 or 52 grain bullets. My old factory Rem 700 was a sub 1/2 moa rifle with this combo.

Both my Sako Riihimakis I have yet to find any combo of bullets and powder that’s appropriate for the cartridge that they won’t shoot well but my three favorites are in order 4198,322 and 4895 and a 52 grain smk or a 50 grain Barts it will do ragged hole 5 shot groups and so pleasant to shoot!.

This cartridge is amazing. It shoots well with so many combinations of components. I liked Sierra 53hpfb over CFE223, RL10, or H322.

A good thread gents!
I won’t ask for loads. However how about what bullet and what speeds to look at, even if they are a guesstimate or what the book says. Just looking to narrow down a parameter of sorts.

I am working on a 222 Howa Mini that has sat neglected since I got it. Have Sierra,Hornady and Barnes 40 and 50 grain selection. Plenty of primer and powder.
I like 4198, I absolutely hate measuring it. My Belding&Mull measure is slow but eats it and is very repeatable. I only can use one at a time, have no idea why I own three:confused:

I shot this target with my 222 last fall trying out 8208xbr with 52 grain Sierra Matchkings. It seemed to want to shoot. I need to play with it a little more.

Is AR Comp too slow for a .222? Shilen finally shipped my .222 barrel so I'll give it a try when all this Wuhan virus stuff calms down.

When I had (3).222's I had best accuracy with IMR 4198 and a Nosler 50 gr BT. I used a Remington 7 1/2 primer. Very accurate and explosive on the critters. H335 was also a good powder in the .222. Love the accuracy and recoil of this round.

It’s on the slower side but I think It’ll work fine. I’ve used RL15 with 55s in 223 and AR comp is a bit faster. Might be dirty with 40s, but with 50s it should give high MV.

As a "always works" and standby because of that, H4895 and H4198 work great. My most accurate load ever though was 22 gr. of AA2015.

Start at 20 and work up.

Joshn-

Howdy !

Homer Powley ( inventor of the “Powley Computer” ) was a reknowned ballistics expert of the 20th century.

His computer listed a lot of IMR powders, that were so dominant at the time.

I took a look @ his “Powley Papers “, as that article appeared in the
“ Guns & Ammo 1974 Annual “.

Homer’s recommendation for powder to use under 50 gr bullets in a .222
was IMR 3031.

You can take a look @ a burn rate chart for today’s powder offerings, to get a good feel for those powders that are in the prefered burn rate zone
close to IMR 3031. That should include proven “ benchrest “ powders, and some shown to be temp stable.
