Best Powder for 45acp 230 grain hollow point

After reading some of the comments here ; I am so very thankful I live in a State that has both Castle Doctrine , and Stand your Ground Laws . And very sad for those who live in anti-Gun Communist Blue States that don't allow citizens to defend themselves in their own homes . All that being said ; I will tell everyone , and anyone who asks . Every round , in every magazine , for ever one of my guns is a "HANDLOAD" ! They are the exact , identical load carried by the Arizona DPS , and if some shyster Lawyer , or DA want to try to make their "Rep" prosecuting me , then , "Have at it" ! If that round is acceptable to our State Law Enforcement , then it is Legal and acceptable for anyone else to use also !
My only suggestion to anyone attempting to Burglarize my home , or bring harm to my wife is ; "Bring your own Body Bag"! You aren't leaving up-right ! My RIGHT to
self defense isn't lessened by some Liberal Lawyer , and his anti-gun views !
I have had cops in Calif state
There is no castle doctrine in Calif
However, There is something the same which is
"No Duty to Retreat"
as stated in PC 198.5
---------------------------------------
FYI, do not seek legal counsel from a cop, they are not trained in such things
==================
BTW - Titegroup and W-231 are great 45 ACP powders
W-231 seems to be somewhat more dirty though in my experience

Never made a single reference to a "Cop" in my post , regarding anything . The only reference I made to Law Enforcement was that my Handload is identical to what the Arizona DPS carry .

NO ! The majority of Officers carry a Glock G22 , .40 caliber with a Hornady Critical Duty 185gr. JHP . as their "stated" load . My handload is a Hornady 185 JHP , loaded to match the velocity of the DPS load ........ Read carefully !
I read carefully.

You said, "All that being said ; I will tell everyone , and anyone who asks . Every round , in every magazine , for ever one of my guns is a "HANDLOAD" ! Same velocity doesn't equal identical load. Also, pretty sure Critical Duty is an FlexLock/FTX bullet.

Same bullet . Same Case . Same Primer . Same Powder ! What is not identical ? Or are you just arguing about semantics ?

You know what powder Hornady uses? I didn't think you could even get the Critical Duty bullet as a component bullet for reloading. Got a link to where I could buy some?

ETA: no, I'm not "arguing about semantics." I making sure we are clear in our words because this topic does have life and death and legal ramifications. Please, don't take it personal.

Tightgroup, 4.6 grains if I recall.
What I see is 230 hp titegroup 3.7 to 4.7 for my 185 grain rn hb 4.7 to 5.7 I'll be trying different grains and loads in the next couple of days get what feels good and accurate, then I'll buy some ready made bullets for my defense, don't want any problems

The reason I feel so strongly against using hand loads for your self defense weapon has been mentioned several times, and I have also stated my reasoning in previous threads. What you and I don't have that major mfg. companies do have is a team of attorneys on staff that are specialized in defending their client against law suits of this nature.
I know I can't afford these lawyers, and I'm sure most of the rest of us can't either. If I'm put into a situation that I didn't create, and have to defend myself or my loved ones with deadly force, I am going to need all the help I can get.
If you still choose to use your own hand loads, do so understanding the path that lies ahead of you.

any shotgun powder is good in .45 acp my fathers favorite load for bullseye was 5.0 grains of 700X with a 185 grn SWC

trying to hot rod a .45 acp is counter productive, 1-16 twist don't like fast. 230 grains at say Federals 890 FPS does the job Nicley. center mass they ain't getting up after their flight backwards. Sometimes SHORT FAT AND SLOW is all you need, the gun was DESIGNED for stopping power.

Some time ago I read two things on this topic of handloads for self defense.
1. It was suggested to use whatever ammo your local law enforcement uses. A counter argument was brought up that LEO department ammo selections are often made on the basis of budget restrictions though so using what they are using might not be the best choice.
2. The writer Finn Aagard (I think that was his name) said he carried handloads loaded stoutly with plain hard cast lead bullets because they will penetrate and being just a cast bullet and not some fancy HP that blossoms into an awesome flesh destroyer, no DA can say you were trying to use a purpose driven mankiller type of load. He never stated that he had to withstand a court challenge on this though.
