22 Royale ...yes I've created another Monster

Well
It seems I just can't sleep at night I lay in bed tossing and turning thinking about what the hell I could make
So I had this savage barrel I bought from somebody on this forum and it was chambered in 223 it is a 26 inch one and seven twist

I decided to go ahead and use that for an experiment
So this weekend my brother and I did our best to make that damn thing a shooter
That chamber was cut .007" out of concentricity from the bore

We had to line everything back up and cut a new chamber, first up was the 22 Creedmoor Reamer then I followed it up with the 204 Slingshot with a 22 caliber pilot on it

This effectively gave us 22 Creedmoor Case Street walled with the 42 degree shoulder

we cut a 5/8 24 thread on the muzzle and dropped a new FPM Spleen Splitter on it

So I rushed home today after work and fire formed a couple rounds with some old Winchester 760 and then I proceeded to load them up

Can you believe that piece of shit Athlon rangecraft would not give me a reading today of all days

LOL I guess I'll give it another shot tomorrow but I'm not going to push it like I did today with 50 grains we're gonna back it back down to 48 and leave well enough alone !!

And at the end of the day I am left wondering how fast was that little 62 grain hornady going we had to be right there at 4000 feet per second out of a 7 twist barrel and it made it to the target
I shot 5 times with that same load

Try moving the chronograph to within the instructions for distances to the bbl and muzzle.

It is hard to say from the video, but the first two tries looked too far down and the one when you moved it inside looked too far over.

If you move it a little closer to the muzzle and closer the to the bbl centerline, you have a better chance of picking up that little fast mover. Also, verify you have the correct settings for a rifle.

Also, I felt a little sorry for your chicken... LOL

I taped a laser pen pointer to my barrel to line up the screens for my old Oehler Model 33 chrono. I taped a target to the first screen so I could see where the laser hit. A pain in the butt but it really got things lined up without shooting the detector screen. You can be way off lining the screens up by looking down the barrel. I quit using my chrono because it takes to long to set up and no-one is allowed to go in front of the benches during live fire. I cannot expect everyone to stop shooting for 15 minutes so I can set up. I have a lot of data acquired. So, I don't need to keep testing my favorite loads.

No surprise. I noticed that right away.

You know what you guys, I had it right underneath of the muzzle, initially
When I fired the first two fire forming rounds and had no problem

Hell Ive never had a bit of problem with that thing.Since I bought it..

I have my lab radar sitting down in the shop
I'll get a chance in another day or two on thursday or friday. To start shooting again and I will set both of them up

I set it outside the window because I thought somehow maybe pointing through the doorway was interfering with it.

She was grouping well inside of 3/4"
And I was bouncing around, I wasn't even trying to focus on accuracy.Just trying to get a dam.Velocity reading.

We will get it next time

Yes, settings were dialed in the quick session
Rifle
Speeds up to 5 thousand..

To be honest with you, I can't even get that little unit to take a firmware update with the app.

Kind of wondering right now, what the hell is going on

I took my little suppressed, twenty two Ruger pistol and fired a couple rounds
Over top of it that I didn't have on film and it was hit and miss with that.As well

I noticed the 69 gr eld vt bullets are out of stock at a lot of places. So I just caught midway with some in.I got five hundred on the way.

They literally have them shipped out the door on the way fifteen minutes after placing the order..

❤️ that

@Webster If I could, I would put a Garmin in your Christmas stocking for you.... I think you would like it.

These new ones are typically very easy, but even they have their limits.

I forgot to ask... How did they do in terms of group for you?
Lol
If I buy another chronograph, my wife would probably kill me

Besides, she doesn't know about the two cans.I have on order right now

Since i'm shooting so much 204 caliber stuff.I decided to get a couple twenty two caliber.Dedicated cans

The 10 ring AB Raptor with 5" reflex
And the exigent defense vanish 5.56

That will be my first
3d laser sintered titanium can.

Pretty much the latest high tech in can manufacturing .
The thing is only 6 inches and so far, all of the evaluations. I've watched have incredible decibel reduction ..

And since most of these barrels, i'm playing with now are mtu contour
I'm not too keen on turning down the profile and making them look ugly.In order to fit that reflex can over them

So I'll be hanging a can off the end of a twenty six to 28 inch pipe..
I better do my best to keep them small and lightweight

Bummer to hear about that chrono acting weird. That can be frustrating for sure.

I hope they get it worked out. Missing shots when doing load development work is a drag.

Spent lastnite with my brother tramming in the lathe to 4 microns.
We noted she was out a thou due to temp swings in the toolroom
and shimmed everything accordingly .

Got the DRO set up on the tailstock .

Received a new Bolt and blueprinted the receiver and new bolt on
the 22 Royale...

cut the chamber .040" deeper and put her together again to take Sierra 69 TMK
still awaiting the 69 gr ELD VT to arrive.

Hope to get back from work in time to fore some today .

I gave my brother my old Rockwell back in 2000 while moving and he tore it down last year and rebuilt
it ...and enhanced it ,,
Every surface , every gear every bearing was meticulously replaced , positive pressure oil system installed.
It is now as precise as any Taiwan or Jap Lathe,

My brother was a machinist in the Navy with me on the Abraham Lincoln back in 91 and we both went on
to college afterwards getting our degree in machine tool technology.

Then both worked at Liebherr a German corp as engineers in gear and automation
He is retiring in 3 weeks ....we will be farting around in the toolroom alot now

making custom component for shooting,

Dies are next ...

Congrats to your brother on his retirement.
Thank you for that ...Now he's my shop slave
LOL
If he ever lets me back on my old lathe it'll be a miracle
He's having such a great time cutting his teeth on barrels and chambers right now

I see him smiling again,,,he's been golfing for the past 25 years and got away from shooting
Now I'm bringing him back into the fray ..

We used to do a helluva lot of wood chucking back in the 90's

We rebuilt the 22 Royale on saturday and blueprinted the new bolt and modded the chamber to accept Sierra TMK as the zero freebore was not helping me clse the bolt on those but allowed the ELD VT

Then Sunday we started the build on the 204 Slingshot with the new VPR action and a 28" Hart blank in MTU contour
finished all but the muzzle we will do tomorrow.
