22 Rimfire Lead Accumulation?

I have a friend who's 22 rimfire has started to foul out after 20 shots with lead accumulation in the first 8" from chamber. He cleans it all the time and it's lead free after cleaning. He's using these lead patch that show what leads left behind and everything seems clean. I'm not up on the issues he's having I suggest using 6 or 7 strokes with JB and clean it again.
Anyone have suggestions what the issues could be? The rifle has shot great in the past until this issue popped up. The only other thing I can think of that could cause lead to accumulate in the first 8" would be cleaning rod damage.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks

Is he borescop ing it ? Is it new or and oldie , target rifle ? Is he shooting high vel copper plated ammo or lead lubed ammo . Is the ammo , if lubed lead new or old , possible the waxy lube was wiped off .

cleaning is not all bad. For most circumstances, as long as you're using the same ammo, you can go quite a while before cleaning. Other times, you wouldn't believe the difference it makes.

I've copied a post I made on the Guntalk forum in 2011. One of those things, that if it hadn't happened to me I'd be really skeptical.

And my post:

Your accuracy experience with CCI SV definitely is contrary to my own. I religiously shoot CCE SV for matches because it always goes off and will shoot under 2" with EVERY 22 target pistol I own and under 1 1/2" with 7 out of 8. Including 3 Hi Standards and 5 Rugers.

May I suggest scrubbing out your bore. I used to be an adamant proponent of never cleaning the 22 bore, but a test I did last winter changed my mind. My shots were just not on call. I was recuperating from rotator cuff surgery so I wasn't sure at first. Then I did a 2 handed rest from the bench at 50ft and you can see the difference after I scrubbed out the bore (see link). This was the same pistol, same shooter, same box of CCI ammo, same night.

I hadn't scrubbed out my bore for (guessing) 40-50,000 rounds so there was a lot of buildup and yours may be a lot less. Just a thought.

He's using CCI Standard 40 gr. lead. It's a older target rifle he shoots weekly league.
He does not own a bore scope.
Accuracy goes south after he shoots 20 or so rounds, if he cleans it accuracy good again... makes no sense to me.

He's not wiping off the wax lube is he ? I'd find someone with a Borescope .
Recently I've found 2 rifles that were shot using old BB caps , both bores were rust/ pitted from the chamber &8-10" foward. Both rifles would lead badly .
Good luck , Gary

CCI Std Velocity will not fit in my FA. The bullet seems to be a little bit larger in diameter than the other CCI ammo....at least that is what I have come to believe as I have shot about 30 other kinds of .22LR in it and have not had a problem. It could be the kind of lube on the bullet, or the actual lead band. This is just an observation that may give you something more to think on.

I had an older .22LR that I picked up at an estate sale. It was lead from chamber to muzzle. Nylon brush and flannel patches by the dozen. I would think I had it, and within a box of ammo it would be leaded up. A buddy let me use some Kroil. Ran several patch of that through my barrel. Could not believe how dirty the patches were. I thought the barrel was clean.

Another guy at our gun club ended up borrowing a friends electronic bore cleaner. it somehow discharged the fouling with an electronic current. Have never tried that myself, but an option it you have a shooter who buys about everything.....

Steve :)

CCI Standard 40 gr lead is all he's ever shot the last couple years in league so the ammo is not the issue I'm sure. I'll get a friends borescope and see what the barrel looks like in the chamber area. thanks

That may be the issue, although to me it seems funny this issue would just suddenly pop up and start fouling out after 20 rounds and the history of the rifle was a good shooter.

I would take some JB Bore Paste or Iosso and short stroke the first 8-10 inches until I removed all the carbon and leading. You would need a borescope to see what kind of progress you were making however. I would then run a wet patch of kroil down the bore. Depending on the condition of the barrel, you may be leading it if the barrel is dry after cleaning.

This^^^^. It sounds like what we call "glazing" in the bore, or a bad carbon ring in front of the chamber that is sizing the bullet to small as it passes over it. Usually some JB and a good bronze brush will take either one out. I actually use Mothers aluminum wheel polish,or the remington brand bore cleaner that has some "grit" in it, it does the trick and they go back to shooting like before.

Had a Shilen barrel once that did the exact same thing. 10-15 shots and would go to pieces. Found that a small piece of the rifling had chipped out. This was obviously a defect but since the barrel had a couple thousand rounds on it, not a warranty issue.
I can tell you a couple things to try:
#1 get lead removal cloth sheet to cut into patches - Birch-wood Casey makes one.
# 2 Clean the barrel with 50% Hydrogen Peroxide & 50% White Vinegar. Let set for 2-3 minutes and wipe
and dry well. This will remove ALL lead fowling. Light Oil patch if it will be not shot following.

Good Luck.

Rlb40x: Thank you so much for your valued information. I had a 1911-22 that was doing exactly this, culminating in a fail to chamber. Remington 40x bore scrub and your advice saved a trip to the shop and restored it's previous decent accuracy. I had thought it to be springs. Thank you kindly.
