22 LR or Hornet for practice rifle

I need a rifle to practice with for F T/R. Something quiet would be good! any thoughts on .22LR V's .22 Hornet? I don't really want to build anything so out of the box accuracy would be needed.

Thanks

Jon

The .22LR is going to be much cheaper to shoot, and you can get more shooting in. I believe 200 yards with a .22LR is about equal to shooting 1000 with a long range centerfire. The Savage Mark II TR may be a good choice.

Id say 22lr cheaper and quieter than a hornet. Savage mark II would be a good choice can pick one up much cheaper than a good hornet as well.

I would try to find a marlin model 2000.It is an extremely accurate rifle out of the box. They were single shots but marlin offered a biathalon kit making it a repeater. You can find them,Go to some of the auction sites and you will get one.If you decide to get one of these I have a spare biathalon kit in my personal stash. They made 2 versions, one with a bell& carlson stock and one with a heavy laminate stock. This is an all out target rifle and with good ammo they will shoot quarter inch groups out to 50 yds all day if you do your part. The triggers were factory tuned and light. This is not a walmart marlin as when they came out, were almost as accurate as any anshutz.I know someone will chime in and say I am full of something, but it is probably that old status thing again.Savage has made some real tack drivers as well. The marlins are real keepers.I will never sell mine ,ever.

While a hornet is a fine round a 22lr would serve you better. Other than the price of ammo ,that keeps going up, a 22lr will teach you better form as the follow through is more important in a rimfire than a centerfire.

I got me a Savage MKII, just for F-class practice.

I got the BV heavy barrel model and I put on the tacticool stock from Boyd's. This style of stock mimics the shape of my regular centerfire pretty well.

The Savage MKII is a very good value, Trigger is pretty fair and easy to lighten up, and with, not too expensive, Wolf MT it is pretty darn accurate. Holes will be on top of holes if I read wind right at 50 yards, and less than 1 moa at 100 yards with full concentration. I could probably do better if my skills were honed and I had a better scope (hard to see those little .22 holes with a cheap optic).

Many have said 200 may be a little too far for meaningful practice because of the ammunition. So, I usually stick to 100. Wind still effects the bullet alot, and most shots can be attibuted to me, without much worry about ammo inconsistency.

.22lr is the way I went, and it taught me alot on wind, I still have a ways to go though. :)
