22 Hornet for Predators

Some very good answers here, some not so good. The member doesn't give us much in the way of information.
He simply asked if a .22 Hornet (Not K Hornet) would be a good rifle for coyotes. My first reaction when I read his question was that it would be o.k. within it's limitations but not necessarily good. One of the things we don't know is weather or not the individual has the ability to re-load. If not he may have a tough time coming up with ammo. It's pretty scarce here in western Montana, even brass is hard to come by.
Another thing we don't know about the individual is weather he has more than one rifle that would be suitable for coyotes. If it's all he has and he's got plenty of ammo I'd say go for it --But as others have said make sure you put the bullet in the right place.
And finally we don't know where he is hunting. I see from his profile that he is in New York but we don't know where in New York. He may be in an area where a .22-250 would be loud enough to make a lot of people nervous to say the least. Or he may live in a part of the state that is heavily wooded and the chance for long shots at "dogs" would be rare. Given these possible scenarios I'd say yes it is a good choice. Is it the best all around choice for coyotes--probably not. On the other hand if it's all I had... :)

Just like any weapon, shotgun, big game rifle, even a hand gun. If you keep your shots inside the limitations of the cartridge your using you will be fine. I use a 22 Mag for.coyotes where noise is a problem long before.cans.were readily available. Inside 100 yards with chest shots it is reliable. I really like the 222.Rem for coyote hunting, inside 200 yards it is fantastic, dead coyotes and minimal pelt damage.

When I was shooting a Hornet(Savage 219, Weaver 4x) I used Win 46gr HPs and stayed within 100 yards.. I gave it to my niece for her first predator hunting rifle, pretty decent rig for West Central Wisconsin.

My go-to cartridges for coyote hunting are the 222.Rem/52gr Speer,.223.Rem/52gr Speer/62gr Softpoint and 22-204/40gr NBT. I do have a 22-250, 22-250AI but rarely take them out and the times I took them out because I was hunting open country ALL my kills were under 50 yards, go figure.

I live in the west.

A 12yo thread..

But yes the Hornet works outstanding on coyotes out to about 175 yards. It's my go to for calling in treed and rolling places where shots like that are the case. Kimber 82's will stabilize the 50gr V Max at 2800 and it just smokes coyotes! The 40gr and 45gr Sierra Hornet bullets do great job too. Never lost a coyote to a Hornet.

Well, even though this is 12 years old and for who knows why brought back, I like .22 Hornet and within its design parameters it is every bit as good as anything on the market then or now. So yes, it will do it quite well, within design. Will a .223/.22-250 etc. do it better? No, not one bit better. It will do it farther, but not better. YMMV

Ive always used something with more horsepower, 22-250 ,swift. , the last coyyote I killed was with a .223. Took one step after the shot. Hornet oughta work good 200 yds. in. Doug

It's a nice little cartridge.low recoil and noise especially with a suppressor fitted.ive shot foxes a little over 200yds.100-150yds is ideal.

The 22 Hornet will smack the shit out of a coyote. Funny thing, this is the last coyote I shot at 150 yards with my CZ 22 hornet who I sold to a member here. Look closely at his butt yes you are correct, but at these ranges, weekend warriors below average shooters with no knowledge of a coyotes anatomy,50 yards,100 yards for a very average shooter who practices a little,150 yards a dedicated hunter who practices more than average,200 yards a seasoned professional who's skinned dozens of coyotes and knows where the vitals are and where his 22 hornet shoots.250 a pro who knows the ballistic drop at various ranges with various loads, practices regularly, can hit a golf ball mat that range. Just mo.A perfect center mass lung shot.

I use the 35 spire Point bergers in my 22 Hornet With H-110 and 4227, also use the 35s in the 218 Bee, the 222 and 222R. The Bergers will hold together at 3,300 fps. At that velocity it makes little holes on the off side of a soda can full of water at 150. works OK on a neck shot or a smaller critter. Have #1s, #3s and Martini Cadets, plus a Sako Vixen. L series.
