22 LR OR 17 HMR

I HAVE ONE EACH IN CZ 453 UNFIRED . I NEED ONLY ONE ,HAVE OVER A THOUSAND GREEN TAG AND REM ELY FOR BOTH. SMALL GAME AND TEACING KIDS TO SHOOT .WHICH TO KEEP ?????????

Hmmm. Both have the single set trigger, they've been discontinued, they're the best modern rimfires CZ made, talk about a Morton's fork! If you don't need the cash, I'd keep both and use the .22 for teaching and the 17HMR for hunting.

That's actually the best. But if 'there can be only one'....I'd go with the 22.

You'll receive answers for either...like Chevy or Ford...each has their rightful fans. I personally like the responses to keep both of your rimfires.

If it comes down to practicality for you, then I'd say keep the 22LR. Ammo will eventually be more reasonable, even though you have plenty now. And if you and your kids end up shooting high volume, then the 22 barrel will clean up easier than the 17HMR barrel.

As much as I like the 17 HMR, the price of ammo combined with the wind drift issues has pushed my 17 HMR rifle to the back of the gun safe. 22LR is much cheaper to shoot at reasonable rimfire ranges. At 17 HMR ranges and much farther beyone I've found the 20 VarTarg is almost as cheap to shoot, more accurate, more fun to shoot and more effective on small varmints.

I would keep the 22 LR.

Getting rid of one of these two "staples" is crazy talk. Seriously, .22's are probably best for teaching kids and a bit less expensive to shoot - and won't require head-shots on small game you intend to eat. If the small game is not to be eaten, ie gophers, ground squirrels, crows, etc., then I'd opt for the .17hmr and the longer range and power afforded.

22lr, Better "Quality" ammo and cheaper. If the 22lr doesn't get it done then I step up to the small 22 centerfire (221 fireball).

Your buddy didn't understand your mission. The 17HMR was designed to kill varmints, not punch paper.

thanks everyone I have 25000 rem 22 and about 1000 eley and some other 22 match . I have no children but after this maybe some ! 17 hmr about 2000 but will buy more soon ,cheap . I live where ammo is available at old prices or can swap cheap 22s for good 17 hmr stuff . i'll keep what I have thanks to you guys !

Definitely keep both -- .22 LR for Paper, 17 HMR for critters. Out here in California, the 17 HMR is probably my first choice for ground squirrels.
