22 Hornet brass preference

I really love the Hornet. Mine, and I have two, are both the Ruger 77/22. Both are stock, one has a rifle basix trigger the other has the factory trigger with a new sear and spring. I have shot everything from 35gr Vmax to my favorite load - 10gr of H110 over a Barnes 50gr Varminator HP. THE BRASS IS JUST Winchester! Here's what it looks like on paper.

Well i have a Ruger 77/22 hornet. It shots factory Hornady ammo very well. I tried reloading but lost interest due to the fact there is alot more things to play with in the .223 + 22-250 world. Also i got into 22lr. We have shot several nice one hole 100yrd groups. Thr Ruger is awesome for a small barrell gun. My son used it deer hunting some, and made some wicked head shots on some whitetail. Love a hornet just a little small, but very deadly...

anyone have any favorite loads for this ..shooting a Ruger and trying to find what it really likes.....TIA

I use mostly winchester. I do have 50 RWS once fired cases but mostly Winchester and Lil gun..some 4227 and red dot for cast bullets.

Try Winchester brass with Lil' Gun powder and a 40 grain Hornady A-Max bullet. This newer powder seems to be THE powder for Hornets.

I use 13 grains with the above bullet and brass with a Winchester SR primer and am getting sub MOA groups in my Anschutz.

Now you have something else to horde - I know I did.

I use Winchester brass. Most of it is older Super Speed stuff.

The Vmax bullets shoot very well in my Pre-64 Mod 70. One bullet that I have had really good experience with is the factory 45 gr HP bullet.

I am working on loads that can duplicate the outstanding accuracy that bullet achieves. Can't understand this because the factory bullet isn't anything special. Guess that bbl just really likes it.

Well I too like the Hornet and I've had very good results with IMR4227 and 40gr Vmax's and Lil gun and the same bullet with small pistol primers. They give me better ES than the SRP. I made a bushing die to size the necks and the longest kill on a groundhog has been 265yds. That 40gr Vmax works very good and I'm looking to try some 50's as soon as the weather allows. I'm shooting a NEF with a 6x Leupold FCH. Long live the Hornet.

I've been working on loads for my Ruger 22 Hornet since the mid-90's. It's the carbine with the small pencil barrel. I've tried just about every combination you can think of and settled on Winchester brass, AA 1680, CCI 500 primers, small pistol) and the best bullet turns out to be the Calhoon 37 Gr. dhp, which is crimped using a Lee factory crimp die. This combo has shot the best and most consistent groups, right at 3/4' at 100 yds. I shoot 10-shot groups for final testing when I get something that works. This combo has been the most consistent every time I test it. I am satisfied with this group because I feel that the Hornet is only about a 150 yard cartridge and with this short barrel, I get about 2700 fps. I don't think you can get enough AA1680 powder in the case to create problems, but I use Accurate's load recommendations.

I shoot a Ruger 77/22 Hornet and love it. It is not a tack driver, best it will do is around 1.5' @100yds. But that's OK since it is only good on chucks out to about 150. I shoot the 35 gr Hornady VMAX at 3100 fps with 12.4gr of H110. The VMAX is great on chucks, coyotes and very safe, it blows up when hitting a twig! But kills chucks like lightning hit them!

Love the Hornet on P-Dogs, I start out with a .17HMR then go up to the hornet as they start learning whats going on and the shots get farther out. You can shoot the daylights out of them and it is cheap and hard to over heat the barrel like my 22-250.

Have only used Winchester brass and very happy with it.

I brought my new cz 527 lux 22 H home last night just kept stairing at it.its a beautiful thing.
Now i have to decide what scope to run and which bullet mold to buy. Ive been powder coating my 45acp boolits so ill try it on the hornet too. Im starting a few loads up using some lilgun and 35 varmiters. I have some old sierra 45 grain bullets here some where . We have a nice indoor range which goes to 100 yards, so got to ge to it.
Im all ears when it comes to 22 hornets.

I have a new Savage 22 hornet and have brass from another hornet that I sold. The brass is a mix of Hornady and S&B.
Bullets I have been collecting are Hornady Varmint 45gr and V-Max 35gr
I also have Lil Gun powder

I have not reloaded any hornet yet. Been tied up with other projects, but plan to get this going soon.

My 77/22 was rechambered to K-Hornet before one shot went down the bore. Couldn't find Hornet brass for weeks, then one outfit showed up with Winchester brass. No problems with it, so I've used it in the K-Hornet ever since.

I use Remington Brass, supposedly heavier, hopefully holds up better. My load consists of 13gr Lil-Gun, CCI SPP, 40gr V-Max - 3021fps. Rifle is a C.Sharps Arms M1885 Low-wall reproduction, 26" barrel. Lil-Gun does heat up the barrel very fast. My other load is 11.0grs H4227 - 2650fps.

Hey guys minimum case length for 22 hornet is 1.393. Max is 1.403 my cases are 1.405-6-7. Should i trim to max length or a thou less.
Max cz mag length seems to be 1.775. What the correct way??
