22 Dasher Varmint Rifle Finished

Just finished up this thing last night. It was previously a 6mm Dasher but now has a Muller Works 22 barrel. 12tw.
Here's the question. With a 53 gr bullet, do I stay with the same powder charge as the 6 Dasher with 105's?

Shooting a bullet that is half the weight of the 6mm bullet, I would say there is a strong probability that the answer is no.

If we take the analogy of starting with 6BR start data to work up a 6 Dasher....

Let's look at 22 BR and assume we will work up to 22 Dasher...

Well I have encountered another issue last night, I necked down virgin brass down in 2 steps, ended up with a 247 bushing as the last one. But the problem is the neck doesnt size all the way down and so the case wont chamber because it hits on the still oversize portion of the neck. I turned the neck and bumped the shoulder back .010 and now it chambers. I loaded a round and fired it in the dirt and all seams well but I dont think I want to bump all them back that much.

How can I get the bushing farther down the deck?

I don't think it's possible. I believe all bushing dies can only size a portion of the neck. You need a FL die. I shoot a 6BR and reload with a bushing die since 2009. It doesn't matter if half the neck is big. I shoot 58-68 gr bullets they are seated only half way down the neck at touch. My 6BRX is worse. A 55 gr bullet is only seated somewhere around 0.050" into the neck. Shoot it and see how it does before you buy a FL die.

One of the issues with a Type S Bushing Die is what you have pointed out, that the neck shoulder junction is often in a big chamfer zone and doesn't get a crisp facet like it does in a regular FL size die. The bushings often have a big lead in chamfer to prevent crushing the necks.

With 22 Dasher, you will have some work to do with respect to getting a regular FL size die. Regular FL size dies will go all the way to the neck shoulder junction. With the bushings, sometimes flipping them over in the die will allow the bushing to get a little more of the neck, but sometimes it doesn't.

What some folks do, is buy a steel bushing and reduce the chamfer by shortening the bushing for the purpose of hitting the brass just one time to iron out that neck to shoulder junction. It is a matter of a bushing being sacrificed for a special purpose, but often more expedient than ordering a FL Size die. At the very least, it can hold you over till your FL Size die shows up.

You would do the same as you are doing now, but you take a last pass with a special bushing that has been shortened to get a sharper chamfer down onto that junction. You have to be careful not to make the bushing so sharp that it has no chamfer and can crush the mouth, but given just enough chamfer to slip over the neck and go down and iron out the brass at the neck shoulder junction. YMMV.

Hopefully you only did that to 1 piece of brass. The shoulder/neck junction that did not get necked down to .247 is thin compared to the remainder of the neck. That's not a very desirable situation.

The bullet central micron dies have 2 different tops one that allows the bushing to float (not sizing the whole neck) and the other for full length sizing of the neck. Another option if you don't yet have a die you want to use.

I have a couple of 22 Dasher rifles. The one that I shoot the most has an 8-twist Krieger barrel with a .025" freebore. I'm shooting the 53-grn Hornady V-Max bullets with 35.0grn of IMR 8208XBR powder @ 3915fps. Groundhogs at 600+ yards.

Ive had several 22 Dasher 12 twist over the years. Just neck down brass and fireform. Imr8208 is a very good powder for this round with 50-55 gr bullets. I just use 6br brass and neck down in bushing die. I use a Harrells Dasher die with the right bushing for this operation. Never had an issue and never turned a case neck on it for Groundhog and Coyote work.

I would try going down even smaller on the bushing and add the expander and expand it back out.

Like use a 20 cal bushing. Then follow up with a 22 expander. That's what I did with 22xc. It has a much thicker neck so a 247 really sized it more than 5 thou smaller than the final 252. But it did get rid of the bump at the base of the case.

This thing shoots pretty good "right out of the box" but its slow. I loaded 31.6 gr varget and its running 3415 ish on the speed. I haven't loaded anymore for it yet. We went out and called in a fox and I currently have 55gr nosler varmint bullets in it and it made a mess of things. LOL. It does have a light ejector mark, shiny spot but no swipe. Bullet tension is about .0015. I may load a couple after lunch at 32.5 and just see how it does.

You should have no trouble getting top speed with a 12 twist 22 Dasher. How long is your barrel? I like IMR8208 the best in that cartridge for 55 gr bullets. I get 4045 fps with 55gr Nosler out of 27 inch barrel. 3980 fps out of 25 inch barrel and 3900 fps out of a 24 inch tube. I would try some thing alittle faster than Varget burn rate for the 50-55 gr class bullets. Accuracy should be top notch in the 3850-4000 fps range

22br with 50 to 55 gr bullets hands down accuracy powder for me is VV135. More speed from some others but accuracy not close.
