22 BR Questions

Thanks in advance for any input. I would like to get a Savage small shank pre fit in 22 BR and use Lapua brass. I want to shoot the 75 - 80 grain bullets with a 7 twist in case i want to try some 80+ bullets also.

The two reamer prints for a Shilen pre fits are 22 BR Remington, Match with a .243 neck and 22 BR Remington with a .248 neck. I'm not opposed to neck turning but .224 + .013 + .013 = .250 so turning down to .0105 on the .248 chamber or turning down to .008 for the .243 chamber seems like a lot without consideration for the larger Lapua base I've read about.

Can anyone whose been down this road please help me get me squared away. From what I've read the Lapua brass has a larger base than the old Remington brass and most of the dies available seem to be set up for the old remington brass.

Is the base difference between Lapua and Remington enough to worry about? I have a Wilson 6 BR Rem. inline neck sizer that that you can tap a Lapua case in with a a couple light soft blow hammer strikes in and taps right out with the decap rod.

I would like to keep it simple, 6 BR lapua brass necked down with enough turned off to make the necks clean. I would think .012 after turning would require a .251 neck.

Anyone know of a smith with a reamer that would do this? Thanks again!

A straight no turn 22 BR would be my choice. A 9 twist will stabilize 80's. Have you considered pre-fits?
I have a Pac-Nor 22 BR, it's great. You will save a lot of money with a pre-fit. I own a 22 BR reamer and throater.

Get a Lapua BR chamber.

Best wishes!

Do the "search thing" for 22 BR, You should be able to find a "smith" or two that have no turn neck reamers. I have a Remage pre fit with a 1-8 twist, just getting started with it. One thing , my fired cases {formed from Lapua 6 BR cases} have a case mouth OD of .250 AND BULLETS ARE NOT AN EASY IN & OUT of fired cases. So, I'll probably try to take .001 -.0015 off the necks.
One thing I did was to measure the bearing surface on all the bullets I intended to use [ 75 th 80- gn] and then used the bullet with the longest bearing surface to set the seating depth of that bullet so that the bottom full Dia. of the bullet was .100 - 1.25 above the base of the neck.

The early BR chambers were based on the 1.520 long Remington cases. The 'later' chambers for the Lapua brass are 1.560 long and a big bigger at the back end.

For a 'no turn' version, a .254 neck diameter chamber for Lapua cases is what you want along with a throat that's appropriate for the bullets you're going to use.

Don't use a 'smith that's not up to speed with this......

Lots of good advice above so follow their input closely. .22 BR Lapua and .254 neck is what you want for a no turn load and shoot with minimal prep. The 22BR Remington will require trimming necks back. No reason to do this if you can at all help it.
