22 ARC Shorty Bolt Action

Have an extra Manners I need to do something with and was tossing around the idea of 16.5" 22ARC or Grendel. Always known about it but looking in to it, it's more impressive than I originally thought. Similar ballistics to a 22N. Figured it would be cool with 64 or 69 TGK's as a general purpose compact gun. Has anyone gone down this rabbit hole? If I got those 64's (love that bullet) to 3050+ I'd take it to a deer blind in a heart beat. I have a pile of 8208 also.

I love the shorty idea but I do think I would consider a bra, little more powder and speed with almost identical case size. I have my mind on a 22gt with 18-20” barrel or possibly even a 22x47 to get the velocity up when giving up barrel life. But back to the bra case I hunt whitetail with it every year, mine is a 6 though too

In shorter barrels, larger bores mean faster powder and more efficiency, I'd go for the 6.5 Grendel. Edited to add, that I was referring to, and assumed the OP meant a 6.5 Grendel. As opposed to a .22 Grendel, which is identical to a .22 ARC with the exception of the ARC's long freebore.

Sounds like a fun project. But, I dont think your velocity is going to be that high. I shot a case between a ppc and grendal and got those numbers with a 30 inch barrel. After four firings the headstamp on the Lapua cases was no longer readable.

Interesting. I've only shot 52-57gr bullets in my 22 ARC/Grendel BR rifles yet but 3700fps is easy and I can get more if I step on the gas a bit more. That's from a 23" bbl. I've shot it at 3850fps but that powder/load wrecked brass up there, in just a few firings.

Just seems like a bigger drop than I'd expect from the 55ish grainers to the 64-69's the op mentioned. I've not tried them so I wouldn't argue much with ya. It just seems like a huge drop off of about 700fps. Certainly possible I suppose.

What powders were you using? Sierra load data shows a max load of 8208 at 3250 with 69 grain bullets. Of course it's bolt gun data. 3325 with cfe and that bullet.

I've found the little 22 ARC/Grendel to be a screamer and it shoots great too.

I was using n540 in a spacegun. This was almost 20 years ago. Well before the 8208 we have now was available.
8208 shoots well for me but it pressures out before making impressive speeds..fwiw. Not sure about n540. Haven't tried it yet. Thinking it's a tad slow for lighter bullets. 2015 shoots good and makes pretty good speeds. But again, 55ish gr bullets.

The published hodgdon data didn't seem very impressive. I was also thinking about the 22 arc with a can. I like that there is good brass and in a pinch factory ammo is pretty cheap.

On the other hand, 22 creedmoor is warp speed even in the shortest barrel.
