22-250ai ?

Or you will have enough data for your next barrel.

Speaking of driving racks a blew one up today at 100 with my heavier 243ai. I was sighting in my viper pay and started screwing around so I shot a tack . First shot .5" right, send shot .25" right, third shot gone. Each time i was off I adjusted the scope a click. I think it is sighted in now.

No clue how long this barrel will last, but hunting rifle accuracy ≠ benchrest rifle accuracy. So I would expect to get a good load worked up and use it for a few years in this barrel. It's not like an F-Class barrel where you cook it with 20 round strings, either.

But I have zero experience with this combination, so we'll find out just how long it lasts. I probably have ~250 shots of futility, before now.

In a way I sort of regret not going 6mm now that I make my own bullets. But on the bright side I can buy 22 caliber bullets for about as cheap as I can make 6mm 105s.

.243 Ackley is an excellent choice. A handful of my friends shoot them, spectacular accuracy and results. Probably would have went that way with this build.

What velocity change do you see between the 8 and 12 twists using the same load? I have been told that increasing the twist reduces velocity, other factors being the same. Any experience with this?

flybuster,

i took out the 243 ackley with 95 grain bergers this morning and never shot anything other than paper and rocks with it, well this morning coyote down at 725. 1st shot was back he went 50 yards to my right i shot again dropped him like a rock. they are effective

If I remember correctly 38.0 gr. of IMR 4064 was always the load to beat in my .22-250 Ack. with a 55gr. Sierra. Start at 35.0gr. and work up, as 38.0 was absolute max. in my gun. Hope this helps. Paul. 8)

I use 38grs with a 55 Nosler BT and a Sierra 55 SBT. Great groups in my 1-12 Shilen

Flybuster,

I've had good results with H1000 and Ramshot Magnum with 75 and 80grain bullets in the 22-250AI.
Just a couple more alternatives for you.

Great, thanks.

I'm running a 23.5" barrel on this Tikka.

I'm not finding much consistency, but I had a 4 shot group in .197" but the 5th shot opened it up to .888". This loading is a 80 A-Max with a lighter charge of H-4350, as I put more powder in, the groups opened up progressively worse.

The 75 Hornady HPBTs are averaging around .5" with the H-4831sc and H-4350. The 75 HPBTs are showing more consistency than the A-Max from one group to the next, but the A-Max are showing a smaller group potential despite its 1 or 2 fliers (if that makes sense).

Bill,
Years ago I was a speed freak but now I choose a bullet and buy a barrel for it, so with a 1:8 I would shoot 75-80 grain bullets and not 55 grain bullets that I would in the 1:12 so I can't answer your question, but your rpm's will be a lot higher 50 or 55 grain bullets in a 1:8 then they would in a 1:12 so if they didn't blow up they would really be cooking :D My 22-250AI has a 1:9, 28.5" Shilen select match on it and it will put 5 69 grain SMK's in one ragged hole if I do my part, it will also put 50 grain V-max bullets into one ragged hole but I built it with the 69's in mind so I have enough to shoot the barrel out with them and then some, it makes a true 600 yard PD rifle but I think when the barrel goes I will re-barrel it in 22brx with a 1:7 and shoot the 90 vlds to 1K with it ;)

well this barrel is done they are just waiting on the reamer for my 6-284 to come in supposedly, then my barrels will be shipped. its looking like some time next week. i am not going to be able to do any load development before i go over, but maybe ill be able to when i come back after getting my stuff set up over there.

mate im using 37.5 grains of AR2208 with the sierra 52HPBT and its been constant .25 moa @ 100m thats with 40 deg shoulder and fireformed brass, neckturned the 50 grain nosler tips work pretty well too with the same load ill put some 3 group targets up in a sec, im running an OAL of 2.437 with the HPBT which is just breathing on the lands, with 37.5 grains im getting 3950fps, barrel is a madco 1 in 12 and its still shooting great after 973 rounds im a fanatical cleaner though!

here are the groups, the one on the black is the best ive ever done 3 shots @ 100m with the 52 Sierra HPBT, The 2 groups on the red paper were done last week 5 shot groups at 100m with the 50 grain nosler ballistic tips :)

i just ordered the same barrel as i just got except with a 1:8 twist. who knows when it will be here, but i want to hear some more about the loads for like the 69 grn smk and the 75 grn a max

I think it's time for me to get a new 22-250 AI barrel. Does 29" 1:8 for the 75 and possibly 80gr AMAX sound about right? I'll probably go with a Krieger, but I'm also considering Bartlein. I've found a heavy varmint one in stock that seems like the way to go.
