22-250AI Thoughts

I think your right on the money! IMHO, I think it makes much more sense to do a CM over a 250AI, just for that reason. But I had to throw it out there. I knew I would have to fire form, but I only need 100 pcs. I will ponder this. The whole reason behind this post, is because I have a buddy who wants to sell the rifle mentioned (LNIB) and I was just trying to get ideas. However, that twist just isn't going to work.

Thanks everyone!!!

When fireforming my loads were pretty accurate.

What are your thoughts on a Ruger Hawkeye Predator 22-250, 14T, 24-inch barrel, and AI it? What weight bullet might I be able to get away with you think? I'm thinking 55-grain max.

I do not like the tapered case on the standard 22-250 and have had bad luck with cycling the action in the pasT

It's a great chambering, my first was in '89 and since then I've always had a couple. Fireforming with 50BT's @ a bit over 4100 (on varmints), formed brass through that barrel 4226 with 50 bal tips. . I like it very much. Don't know how a Ruger would feed. Mine are on Remingtons and feed ok but you have to chamber a little slower......not a big problem because the thing is so accurate you don't need a second shot, it gets hit it goes down.

Hum.... I was always told that the std 250 from time to time could give someone cycling issues. I know in my M77R I experienced that. Could have been buck fever though, or just short stroking it? IDK?
NEVER Had ANY, Feeding "issues", EVER with either of, my 2,.. .22-250 Remington, Model 700, "Lefty's".
Used, a Slight Shoulder "Bump" with, FORSTER Dies = NO issues
Using, 50 gr. V-Maxes at, 3,550 FPS, in my Braked .22-250,.. I can SEE,. the "Splodies" on Sage Rats !
I'd "Look at" your mod. 77 Ruger Action for, the "Problem",.. NOT,.. the Cartridge

Be aware that for a proper Ackley chamber the barrel needs to be set back a thread. The 22-250 Ackley I have came to me used & was a lesson in headspace/case separation control. A Rem 700 V that someone just ran the reamer in until it cleaned up the old chamber, it had c. .020" extra length & separations on the 2nd firing. After figuring out the rifle's quirks, it shot splendidly for over 1500 rounds until it gave up the ghost last year. I was still using some very tired WW brass that's pushing 30 yrs old with unknown # of firings. It's destined to become a no turn 12 twist 22BR when the barrel gets here.

I had no feeding problems from the stock (I think) action the rifle was built on.

Not sure if you know this already, but bullet length, not necessarily weight makes or breaks the stability thing. The above Ackley shot Hornady 53gr FBHP match very small @ just shy of 4000 fps, but wouldn't have anything to do with their longer 53gr V-max at any speed... the reason for the 12 twist on new barrel.

Another standard 22-250 14t 26" that just loves 52gr Bergers @ 3970+fps appeared in the closet last year so a 2nd fast 22 isn't needed right now. I would build another Ackley without much 2nd thought. I already have brass, dies, & a fair knowledge of the cartridge.

The Standard .22-250 Rem. Gently, Min. sized and with, 50 gr V-Maxes or, the 52 gr. A-Max / 52 gr. Bergers,..
Keep my, 8 lb. Rem 700 "Walking Varmint" Rifle ( Braked ) from ANY, Muzzle Rise / Recoil, AT, 3,500 to 3,550 fps.
Those are, .223 AI Velocities & VERY Accurate and ENOUGH for Me to, "See the Splodies" on, Sage Rats and PD's !
I have NO Need of any more, Velocity or, .. Recoil & Muzzle, RISE.
I will Go with, the new,, Well Designed, .22 GT cartridge ( 12 Twist ) when, THIS Barrel is,.. Done.
Same Weight Rifle and,.. Bullets / Velocities,..
For Me, a little Bit, LESS is,.. More !

Nothing wrong with that if it’s going to be a coyote hammer. Forming loads should be plenty accurate for that ! See how that rifle cycles the standard 22/250, could be better off leaving it alone
I have had them both 22-250 and 22-250 AI and never a cycling issue in my Remington 700's and Ruger M77R . Right now I have a Remington 700 BDL 22 Creedmoor with 1 - 7 twist and it shoots tiny little groups.

I vote for trying to get the '250 to shoot better or going w 22BR. The Mauser brothers figured out the tapered case fed easier. Tapered cases also worked well in machine guns.

I would look for a 12 twist gun, AI it, and run 53 v-max's, if you are looking at factory guns.

I have an axis in 22-250 that I pondered ordering a new barrel for and wondered the same Mike if I should go with AI just another idea in the back burner maybe some day.

A 22-250AI is on my "one day" list - but it will need a 7 twist barrel for more fun! I already own 2 Ackley's - a 257 Roberts AI and a 6.5-06 AI. Both on BSA actions.
