22-250 remington

I also have a 22-250 in a vssf-ll , it likes 37.5 grains of h-380 with 55g nosler bt seated 0.024 off the lands with cci primers a 5 shot group at 100yds was around 3/8'' consistantly,I tried varget with the noslers and the v-max and it didn't shoot to my liking,It is a great gun and fun to shoot

Hello
I had the same problem years back with a Remington. Friend told be back down on the powder. So I did now I am loading for 5 rifles with this load. Win primer, 35.8 grs H380, and 55 v-max 10 thousands of the lands. Not a fast load but it shoots great out of all 5 of the guns.

3 savages
2 remingtons
1 thompson

I have had better luck with 50 gr noslers in my 1500 howa 22-250. 37 gr. varget shoots sub .75 groups but it DOES NOT LIKE to be seated close to the lands about .030 off works best. for some reason all the vmax bullets wont shoot and nosler 55gr wont either. load shoots about 5" at 516 yds but my rest is a little wobbly. It is clamped to my deck rail. But i cant complain its across an open field and wind on these things is huge. btw chrony shows 3840 fps

This is my savage 5 shots at 100 yards

CCI 200
34.0 IMR 4064
Hornady 60gr HP, Sierra 60gr HP, or Hornady 60gr V-Max they all produce the same results loaded to Sierra COAL lengths
Win Brass

Hey all! I've seen more than once the 14" twist guns not wanting to stabilize 55 grainers! Brad I assume your savage is a 9" twist like mine! I haven't tried the 60 grainers yet, shoots the 55 gr Nosler BTs too well! I've shot in the 2s with the Nosler 55s. Full length sized R&P or Fed. brass, 36 gr. Varget, Win LR primer, bullet jumped .020". Shoots awesome!

I could never get Varget to work worth a darn in any of my 22-250's, the old standby H380 works good for 50-55's in most any rifle, and my fave for 50-55's would have to be IMR 4895. Try jumping a little more, say .035, .055, and .075 and see what works best.

Berger 64's/RL-19 work very well in 12 twist and under.

GrocMax is dead on, a load of 38gr/H380 shooting a 52gr match bullet has been the std accurcy load for the 22-250 for years. I fact it is reported that Hodgon himself was first testing this load it produced a 0.380 group and this is how the powder was named. It has served me well over the years with most 50 to 55 grain bullets out of a 14tw.

i had the same rifle, had same problems, nothing helped. tired everything a could think of. best luck was with 40 gr and varget, but they where way to hot.. could not find a fix for it, best safely load group i could get was 1 inch on good days. finally got tried of trying and wasting money on it, and traded it for a 243 remm 700. looks like it is going to be a shooter.
the worst part was no help for remmington. friend has a win model 70 in 22-250, best factory rifle i have ever seen. with facotry loads it will shoot 1/4 inch all day. even better with hand loads. dont know why the remmington would not shot. always heard good thing on 22-250's.

Zebra, I have a 700 Remington heavy barrel stainless steel with a thumbhole stock this just the way it came from Remington except I added a Jewell trigger. The very best loads I have found is 52gr Sierra Match King 35.0gr IMR 4320 Fereral 210M set .010 off lands (3550fps) the other is 41.0gr Winchester 760 same primer same bullet and still set off lands .010 (3750fps) Both these loads shoot 1/4" 5 shot groups. I didn't have any luck with Varget or H380 they shot ok nothing great.

I have been reluctant to shoot any of the 52 or 53 grain bullets in my 22-250! I should try these some time, as RJ suggested to me once :), and see how they shoot! Thanks!

Have any of you tried the new 8208XBR yet. Looking forward to trying this when the weather gets a little nicer hear in Montana. Bought some A-Max 52gr bullets and a bucket of the powder to try the recipe below.
Bullet Weight (Gr.)ManufacturerPowderBullet Diam.C.O.L.Grs.Vel. (ft/s)PressureGrs.Vel. (ft/s)Pressure
52 GR. HDY A-MAX IMR IMR 8208 XBR .224" 2.350" 32.5 3612 52,200 PSI 35.5 3837 60,100 PSI

I have as said by others found flat base bullets can be better than boat tails. I like 53gr match flat base in 22 cals. It has already been said but case length can cause accuracy problems by being too long.

Well fellas, finally tried some 52 gr. bullets in my 22-250! Tried them with some IMR 4320 first but, not really great accuracy. Tried them with some H380 next and wow, they shoot really well! Wished I would have done this long ago. The 52 gr. I'm using are Berger 52 gr. Match Varmints and do they shoot. First group with 38gr. H380 was .311 and that was with bullet kissing lands. Second group was .287 and that was with a .005 jump. Both of these were three shot groups. I'm amazed to say the least! Thanks!

Mike,

skimming through the thread, I haven't seen any mention of barrel - bullet preferences. Often, a barrel simply doesn't like a particular make / model of bullet, so it may be that while your rifle won't perform well with 55gn V-Maxes, it would with Nosler Ballistic Tips, or Sierra BlitzKings. That's always my first recommendation to people having problems with accuracy in what on paper is a good load.

Having said that, I agree with many respondents who suggested trying a slightly (or for that matter much lighter) bullet in a .22-250 that gives poor results with 55gn bullets is well worth a try, as some rifles never seem to give their best with this bullet weight.

I think the main problem is two fold, all 55gr balistic tips, sierra and Hor, etc are longer than 55 gr sbt and are marginal on a 14 twist, they need 3600fps min to begin to hold stabality, some bbls will stabalize them and some will not -
as all bbls twist rates are not exact, also inside dia./ roughness, vary, After a conversation with Carrol Pilant at Sierra, a shooting friend I did the following

a 13 or 12 twist solves the problem, I had Hart make me a 13 twist and Bobby Hart installed it on a 40x, 26" it shoots 41 gr of 414 at 3740 in the .1"-.2" with 55br Sbk's and is mean to pd

your solution is to go to a shorter bullet, 52-53 or 50br as you have a fixed twist, velocity will help, but may not solve the problem

The barrel on my rig is a 26" 9 twist! Plenty fast enough to stabilize any 55gr. bullet! The problem I was having is that the Nosler 55 gr. didn't like H380 all that well and liked Varget a bit better but, wasn't getting very good consistency out of the Varget! May want to try a slower powder such as H414! I did find out today that the Berger 52gr. Match Varmint are pretty susceptible to wind out at 300 yds. Great 100-200 yd. bullet, from what I can see anyways! I have some 55gr. Sierra Blitz Kings and I may try them with some H414 soon! Thanks!

Mike

With a 9 twist the Berger 60's and 64's ought to shoot really well and hit 3300 with ease. I bet a safe 3500+ is possible with RL17.

I hate to be a spoiler, but forget the forgone responese, the lost of 30-31 gr varget is 5gr low. you need to go up to the 35-36 lever and then look at h414 and 4064 and h380 in the Sierra and Hornaday loads

The rifle if it has a 14xtwist will struggle to handle the longer 55gr bullets (sierrs sbk) but will handle the shorter 55gr sbt , etc.

up the velocity and check shorrter bullers.
