Remington 700 Varmint SF 22-250

Some barrels will not digest a certain shaped bullet, regardless of what's behind it.
I once owned a 22-250 that shoot good, but as everyone, I was always looking for something better.
A fellow gave me load info(different bullet) that he said was used by himself and 2 others, that was breaking eggs at 500 yds. Sounded terrific to me. I tried it, and that load in my rifle, wouldnt shoot inside of
a Mexican hat @100.
All barrels are not created equal. LDS

I believe you have the same stock on that rifle that came on my SPS. If it is that is part of the problem. My rifle new shot 3/4 to 1 inch groups till I changed the stock to a B&C Medalist and upgraded to a Timney trigger.

Is this what the rifle looks like?

Here's mine with the B&C stock.

First thing I did when I got it was replace the stock and trigger. I put a Magpul Hunter stock on it and a Timny trigger st at 8oz. I can get it to shoot 1/2 inch groups. I know it can do better than that. I started with a heavy jam and worked down from there in .003s of an inch increments. It gets better as reduce the amount of jam so I am going to open it a bit more.

You did right. 1/2" groups are pretty good for a .22-250. One other thing I had to do living in Ohio is quit using H380. First fall I went through with mine I noticed as the temps dropped the POI changed. I've switched to Varget now and it's not as bad as temps change.

Anyone out there own and load for a Remington 700 Varmint SF, 22-250? I am having problems developing a load for this rifle. Looking for offset from the lands. I have been experimenting with it of and on for several months and can't seem to find the right distance off the lands. I have jammed it and backed off and still can't seem to get what I feel is satisfactory groups at 100 yards.

Another problem I am having is that the first shot will be 3/4 inch high and to the right and then the next two will be tight just below it. I am ready to chuck this thing into a lake. Need help.
Nick, I've had a few of these recently brought to me because they wouldn't shoot. The bad news is everyone I examined with a bore scope showed severe fire cracking. Folks can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that it takes only a few hundred rounds of 22/250 ammo to burn out a barrel. Especially if you're shooting 200-300 rounds in one afternoon. I've owned several 700 VSSF's and only with careful cooling was able to extend life to 1400-1500 rounds. I had a friend burn a new barrel out in just two weeks of prairie dog shooting. That was about 200 rounds a day on alternate days. His idea of cooling was giving a days rest, LOL! Your scenario sounds like a worn out barrel. A bore scope would certainly evaluate what you have to work with. But you should be able to get the best accuracy at jam or .005"-.010" off with varmint ballistic tip boat tail bullets. One third MOA is not far fetched with the 700 VSSF. Good luck! Hope things work out with it.

When I take this rifle to the range, I fire three shots and then use a barrel fan to cool it. I know I made a mistake with this caliber but it's what I have so I have to live with it for a while. When it is time to re-barrel it I will most likely go to a much slower caliber. Been thinking 30PPC. Been told it is super accurate and long lasting barrel.

No way is a 22-250 a mistake. Sure the 30 ppc will give good life and scores but the 250 is a classic and a lot of people’s favorite. You can stretch out the life. I like them with faster twist and heavy bullets but even with the 50 class you can stretch out a few hundred yards with good accuracy. Not long ago a guy on here had worn his lands down so much he had to seat his bullets way out chasing the lands and posted his results. He had a freakish round count yet was able to restore accuracy. That’s in part why I’d let em jump a good bit now and as it ages slowest chase forward. Nothing wrong with a good jump, look at the weatherby catrdges. I feel like a lot of people new are too obsessed with jamming every bullet into the rifing when they don’t need too. Sounds like you’re on the right track though so sorry for the late night rant.

I don't know about the rest of you but I am 82 years old. I shoot twice a week and my goal is small groups. When I don't get them, I come home disappointed and go back to the bench and try again. I am slowly getting there with this rifle. My fear is by the time I reach my goal, I will have shot the barrel out. I just shot a barrel out on my 6.5 Creedmoor and have ordered a new one. 2,000 rounds through it. I did not expect it to last any longer than that and feel I got my moneys worth. The rifle shoot good enough for most folks. I am averaging groups of 9/16 inch but know I can do better.

I also own a Rem 700 VSF 22/250. My load is 52 gr Berger Varmint, 38.4 grs H-380, Rem 9 1/2M in a Hornady case loaded 10 thou off the lands. Shoots .4-.5 at 100 yds.

Nick - My early 1990's 22-250 VSSF with a Jewel trigger consistently yields .5 MOA or better with 38.0 gr. H-380 and nearly any 55 gr. bullet @ 2.400". I mostly use CCI BR-2 or Federal GM210M primers. The attached group was with Nosler 55 gr. Ballistic Tips; not unusual for that load.
