204R keyholing 32's ???

Ok, think I got it? Maybe. Cold clean bore first three shots today factory ammo, under 1/2. Shot 4, inch out, shot 5 = goodbye. So then without cleaning I shot 5 rounds of handload 40's and all 5 touching.
Then I cleaned it as best I can (its hot as hell in az) and shot 32gr zmax hand loads. First two under 3/8's then the third tumbled. SO, its fouling very quick. 40's keep goin so im just gonna run with it :)

are you cleaning with a brush... or just a patch?

patches only does not do it for me.... gotta use a brush to get the tough stuff out.

Good bronze bristle brushes, JB....call it done.

Throw brushes away in 80 strokes.

Your barrel maybe rough, really rough. Brownells has the Lyman bore scopes on sale for around $154 delivered, good investment.

Also, Brownell's sells a bore lap solution that is about 320 grit, you may consider going down this road, after you buy a bore scope.

Without a bore scope, you're never going to know what's going on in that Barrel. Everything else at this point is guess work. You said it was a used Barrel, so there's the unknown factor. I've had my borescope going on 15 years, I can't tell you how many times somebody has brought over a rifle barrel for me to look at, told me it was clean and guess what. In my opinion if you're going to proceed without a borescope, you need to do an incredible amount of brushing with something like Witches Brew to get out what's in there, something is causing it to . foul faster than it should. The only way I would proceed with lapping compound is if I knew there was a flaw in the barrel and I was going to attempt to lap it to save the barrel but that would be my last choice. Good luck

This was an unfired 6.5cm savage takeoff. I don't know what happened when they done this barrel but it is some kind of ugly inside most of it looks this way. Almost like they threw some trash in there before they rifled it for good luck. Extreme pitting and gouges. I'm glad I had a borescope before wasting all those components trying to get it to shoot.

I would find a borescope and have a peek if it was me.

That's the reason I don't own any 17's ....a bore scope for 17 cal is very small, very expensive and easy to break. I have friends with 17's and they brag about them all the time. I have been tempted to go to the dark side. But instead I just get another 20 caliber,

But their soooo much fun! :)

Ive got a match barrel on my fireball. 200 rounds and not a trace of copper. Its the single shot that sucks :( I wish I could get a savage to feed

I've heard the smaller calibers foul quickly, but that is ridiculous! On another note, if you don't want those 32's, they will work in my 20 vartarg just fine!

Im too scared too! Haha

You could do what I told the guy with the .308 that started shooting horrible.

Take a brush and run it down the bore. Pull it back through and feel for the "harder to pull" spots. That is where all of your carbon will be.

Any chance you guys could direct me to an affordable bore scope that will do 17 cal and up?

Nothing out there that's "affordable" if you want to do 17 cal. Only scope that will do 17 is the Hawkeye or some other expensive medical endoscope.

I use the Lyman Borecam and it works excellent. Shows me everything I need to see very clearly, but will only work on 20 cal and up. Luckily I never got into 17 cal rifles. All my rifles are 20 cal and larger so the Lyman works perfect for me.

Get yourself a borescope and you'll likely retract that statement. ;)

I agree. There's absolutely no way that no copper is in the bore after 200 rounds. Send the rifle to me and I'll upload pictures of copper fouling in it from my borecam ;)
