20 Vartarg case capacity question

Since, ASbobcat and Rifleman700....
Do any of you have velocities with your "other than AA2200 powder" choices? I picked up 3 jugs of 2200 recently but have some of your mentioned flavors available but don't want to mess with them if it means almost a 10% Vel drop.....

Finally got around to loading some Vartarg cases this morning for the first time. After a bunch of research, I settled on H4198 powder. When I got to 18.0 grains of H4198, the case was filled up into the neck. Is this normal?

My fireformed 221FB Lapua and 5.56LC brass both hold 19.0 H4198 to the top of the neck from a 6in drop tube. I ran into pressure issues just below this with 39gr SBK's, so I think most are right that AA2200 is best for top velocities. But I think you will find H4198 best for accuracy. Depends on your intended use.

I maxed out pressure wise just below 18.8gr H4198 behind 39gr SBK's and CCI450's in Lapua 221FB cases. Velocity 3575 in 26in bbl.
Most members seem to be getting a couple hundred fps more with AA220.
The new Lapua 221FB cases seem to be about as tough as LC brass with a lot less trouble forming.

let us know how it works out. also it would be nice to know your barrel maker/twist and length please, I like mine so much I'm going to build another
good luck

Mine is a 26in 12 twist, which I think is a good compromise. 24in might give slightly better accuracy and 28in would probably give slightly more velocity (especially at the 4,000+fps some are claiming), so it depends on your intended use.

I settled on 18.3 of 4198. No pressure issues. Didn't chrono it yet but very accurate with the 32 vmax and 35 Berger and was turning prairie dogs inside out last month. Great little cartridge.
