20 Vartarg case capacity question

That's quite normal with H4198, and about the same with Re-7. AA2200 is the best powder for full velocity loads. By the way if your chamber was cut with Todd Kindler's chamber dimensions, your Lapua brass is going to be larger at the head than the chamber dimension there. Lapua 221 brass is .3755" and the Kindler reamer dimension is .374", just an FYI.

Not sure what reamer x-caliber uses. What if it is .374 at the head??

It'll still work, but you'll experience a click on opening the bolt. I'm currently using the old reamer with the Lapua and it's holding its own.

Like Adam says Lapua brass will work but you will get that clik. You can use Remington brass or make from 223, they have the .374 head.

Everyone I've recommended that load to has seen those velocities or within 3% of that 3800 mark. Typically 20.5-21gr will end up being maximum. A CCI450 primer is needed, a good chamber is also needed. Even the 15" xp100 20vt I built a local guy is seeing 3700 with 39gr BK.

ADAM
I'm at 3700+fps with the 40g. bullet in my Vartarg and brass longevity is great. What Adam say's is true with AA2200 powder and terrific groups too!

can you guys explain this click your talking about? I'd like to know more.
thanks
Basically it's the primary extraction cam, on the bolt, that's clicking. It's popping the case from chamber and the audible click is that happening along with the extractor engaging.

I tried 4198, RL7, and a couple of other powders in the VarTarg I built for myself several years ago before stumbling upon AA2200. Velocities went from 3300 to 3700fps, and accuracy improved quite a bit too. I sold that beautiful little rifle (built on a M700 CDL 17 Fireball with a very nice factory stock) after giving up on finding any decent prairie dog towns locally. Have regretted it ever since, especially after Lapua 221 brass came on the market. Have a Howa Mini bbl'd action in 222, and just ordered a couple of .204" 1-9tw Bartleins off their inventory list, so will be chambering either a #2 or #3 sporter blank to fit the Howa. Now all I need is a stock to fit that new Mini action, and the time to get the rifle together.

Just finished a PD trip put over 200 round thru a 20 VT barrel from Bugholes it took 4 patches to clean up one of the finest barrels i have shot.

Hello Charles, what was the Bbl manufacture, twist, Conture and Bbl length you purchased from Bug holes!

Thanks for your time.

I swirl H4198 around the funnel and pour slowly and easily get 18.5 grains into reformed LC brass. You might try a drop tube also. I have some Lapua cases also and haven't noticed a click yet on my rifle, but the cases do show a rub mark from the chamber near the base.

Finally got around to loading some Vartarg cases this morning for the first time. After a bunch of research, I settled on H4198 powder. When I got to 18.0 grains of H4198, the case was filled up into the neck. Is this normal?
13.5 gr 4227 or buddy uses 18gr of 8208.. both kill p-dogs well

I have gotten as much as 18.7gr of h4198 in my cases which are made out of rp223 cases. but I have settled on either 19.5 gr of 2200 with CCI 400's or 18.3 of RL 7 (some really old stuff inherited from dad)..Todd Kindler's latest update is saying good things about RL7 for 20 VT and I also use it in my 20 ackley bee's
My numbers agree. Both RL7 and H4198 are excellent powders in the Vartarg.

Typically Lapua brass case capacity is less than other brands because there is more material in the case head / web area. This is why you can run hotter loads with their brass.
