20 ppc

Just a quick question is the 20ppc a barrel burner?..
That just seems like alot of powder under the little .20cal bullet.
Is the .20 ppc capable of something, the .20 var-targ is not?
Seems like alot of (extra) for the return in performance..for general bench and varmint shooting..(not competition).
But I suppose if you were not shooting competition a person would choose a different. 20? What's the verdict

My OPINION from a lot of reading is it is about the max capacity needed for a good balance of bbl wear and velocity.
20 BR on up to 20-250 is toast range. VT or Duster take a fair amount of case forming. I like the 20 Prac, Tac or straight 20-222 from an arm chair perspective. To save 4 gr of pwdr, 500 rounds is only <29.6% pwdr savings. 5gr is 37%.
Another consideration is what reamer may be available for cheap, free? Also brass on hand? Don't have to load to max. Just might find a good combo 2-3 gr under screamer territory. I had a stock 22-250 unbedded, stock Savage that was an HONEST 3/8 performer at 2.5gr under max w Statke 55s. And l aint no wind doper, bench shooter.

To each their own - fun to be had regardless of path taken. :)

20VT & 32gr bullets-3800-4000fps

20PPC 39/40gr bullets-3800-4000fps

The VT forming is minimal at best. If you buy the brass from somebody who makes it or make your own like I do its no different than shooting any new brass from any cartridge. New 221 Fireball brass is a simple pass through the VT die to neck it down and move the shoulder forward from 23 to 30 deg.

AFWIW: To me the 20PPC is the best of the .20 cal "larger" capacity cases. It's right on the margin of overbore. I had several .20BR's (excellent accuracy), .20/250 (short bbl life), and even a .20/223WSSM (really stupid on my part)...all in the name of trying to make a .20 cal do a 1000 yds plus for Praire Dogs. Finally gave that idea up as the 55 gr Berger pencils after 800 yds (to many drag offs).

I never shot 32 gr bullets in the .20PPC. It's always been a 39 gr/40 gr bullet round to me (3950 fps). I once killed 23/25 "Sage Rats" at 425-450 yds. That's consistent to me. I've made 600+ yd shots on both PD's and GS's with the 20PPC. Amazing accuracy! It bucks the wind well. Barrel life should run 1800-2000 rds.

Build one...you'll like it!

less fire forming its formed out nearly 100% in the and gets close to PPC velocity's

Don't you have to neck down 220 Russian brass for the 20 Beggs just like you do 22 PPC to 20 PPC?
So educate me whats the difference?
Can you even find 220 Lapua Russian brass and 20 Beggs dies anymore?

i did mine on a atlas action .20 Beggs and got dies from Gene beggs its a simple 1 pass through the dies and they form out nearly the same a that of fired brass

So does a 20PPC, 20 Beggs 20 Prac all are just a simple pass through a die not 1 is easier than the other.
I'm not knocking the Beggs at all just pointing out all three I mentioned are just the same as far as " forming" brass there just a simple neck down from a parent case.

The 20ppc requires fireforming that the 20 beggs doesn't... asssuming both start with the lapua 220 russian parent case.

20 PPC and 204 Ruger have nearly identical case capacities. Overbore? You decide.

Edit: And I’ll say it again. There is NO DEFINITION of overbore. The overbore discussion is nothing more than various opinions of relative efficiency.

Were getting out in the weeds here, 22PPC brass necked down to 20 cal is a simple pass through a die just like I stated earlier no mention of 220 Parent case make it complicated if you like.

It’s not a barrel burner- to answer your 1st question…

Both HAVE won SR matches…
This is my point...
For the .20 cal cartridges..where is the line of separation?...from my experience the .20 cal is simply accurate end of subject.
Let's say
.20vt
20-222
204 ruger
20prac.
20 ppc
20br
20-300 remington ultra mag..hahaha
Every cartridge listed offers something a little different then the other..
The .20 practical was an impressive cartridge but I sold the rifle after I had about 100-200 rounds down range to fund another project.
So I didn't get a first hand experience with barrel life.
Does the .20 practical, and 20ppc have about the same barrel life?..
Is the 20 ppc more accurate then the 20 practical
Can the .20 ppc be used with short barrels?..what is the best 20 ppc barrel length..
