20 ppc AI

I mean i get it..a race car needs new tires after a few laps .if your after the performance then barrel life is a little farther down the list of priorities
I dont mind short barrel life, its not the end of the world
Providing you can plan for it.
I thought i would shoot out my 6br i was so excited when it was built..haha..i ordered 2 kriegers, had them both fitted and chambered. One is in a barrel sock in the back of the safe..just in case.ready for a quick change and no wait time when the time comes .but at this rate i think my son will be installing it for use after im long gone..the 6mmbr is pretty gentle on barrels..my AR barrels feels like it take way more abuse then any bolt action ever could. Even my pac-nor fireball barrels are going strong ..
But 1000-1500rds and done..i would have to get two barrels made up right off the starting line. And hope they last a little longer..if finances allow
Good thing is once you burn one out on performance , you have a perfect fireform barrel to beat on instead of a new fresh, sharp barrel
So thats a good thing.
I would like to see videos of a 20ppc at the reloading bench, and the shooting bench doing its work..i think it would be a fun watch..
If enough folks watch it maybe it will pay for your next barrel..
If chicks can squeeze into some outfit and bounce around making money on you tube with underwear crammed. Up there crack .why not a beautiful rifle..
Besides ive seen plenty of breast in my day..every woman has them..
Not every one has a unique rifle to show off..hahaha
The ppc case & 20vt case design are more inherently accurate than a 223,204,222 case b/c of the short/fat combustion chamber for the powder-
& it’s not over bore to the 20cal… should last a long time…

The .22 ARC case might work as a parent case. You might not have to turn the neck.
I'm not sure of rim size.

Hal
They probably would but If I'm gonna form some I'm after Lapua cases.
I've got 200 Norma 20PPCAI ones formed.
I dont mind turning cases i have to for all my 17 badger, 20Vt, 20SCC, 6.5x06AI and ones I make. I have to Turn the Lapua 22-250 cases also, I just figure its part of doing business in the wildcat game

For those interested i did a little testing with my 20PPCAI with the 55 just for FPS and pressure nothing for accuracy due to i have a 11twist. I used Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass and Lapua 7.62x39 I formed to 20PPCAI. The Grendel brass i loaded with RL15.5 and topped out at 3402 no pressure signs and the powder was starting up the neck, no drop tube or vibrating was used.
The 7.62x39 brass was loaded with RL15 and was starting up the neck also, i hit some stiff bolt lift at 3442 and hard bolt lift at 3499 FPS so I stopped there.
I only have a 24" barrel so in my observation about 3400 is gonna be about max with a 24" barrel maybe more with 15.5.
28" barrel you may get 3450 or more.
All loads were used with a 450 primer also.
The Grendel Brass is what I will be using if I decide to move forward forming any more its easier than the 7.62 stuff.
The 7.62 bras weighs about .12 more than the Grendel I havent done a H20 comparison yet.
One other thing the Grendel brass does have a "snugger" PP pocket vrs the 7.62 brass

Sherm,

What kind of speeds do you think one can achieve with 55bergers with a 20ARC?

About the same, the Arc case is about 34 gr H20 and my 20PPCAI Norma Cases are from 33.2- 33.5 H20.
The PPC case has proven itself in pure raw accuracy its why I believe its a good one for the 39-55 bullets. Shorter neck case are gonna give up either stuffing the bullet deep in the case or seating lighter bullets way out the neck if it wants to shoot close or into the lands.

Alpha 6PPC cases would be interesting necking down to a 20PPCAI.
Later on towards spring if I could get my hands on a few I would give them a try just to compare to the Grendel case.
A better comparison might be with the lighter bullets in mine because of the 11 twist all I could test is speed or pressure and I don't think that would change that much with what I've already done with the 55's

Sherm,
If you message me your address I’ll send you a few Alpha 6PPC.

I’m working on a 17 PPCAI reamer for heavy .17 bullets and planning to use Alpha brass. A couple formed 20AI cases would be handy!

Just got a handful of cases today and started measuring. ~1.505” OAL to start and 1.555” when sized to .17 using a Blaine Eddy style plate.
Seated a 35gr Reeds bullet just above the shoulder junction and neck diameter was .201” so probably going to have to turn necks a bit.

You guys seeing around .020” shortening of the neck when fireforming your .20 cals?

No more like .006.
I trimmed the Grendel cases back to about 1.510-1.512 before fire forming after necking down and after they end up around 1.506 give or take. The 7.62x39 were shorter because the shoulder dia. was about .020 smaller in dia.
If your at about .420 then it will be in the neighborhood of .006
My chamber is 1.515 according to my print.

Good to know. The straight PPC doesn’t have much taper so that makes sense.
