$20 borescope

Joe R

Gold $$ Contributor
Hi guys,
Two years ago I bought a $200 fiber optic bore scope (see picture below) to check and see how clean/dirty my barrel was, I have been very pleased with it.

This morning I happened to notice that there is a cable only version that you can plug into a USB port and it is only $18. The cable is similar to mine (6 LED) and its 10 feet instead of three feet. At that price it seems like the kind of tool that every shooter should have.

Kindest regards,

Joe

They are all over eBay from bettween $18 and $30. I bought one and it is great.

I think the $290 fiber-optic version that Lyman is bringing out is up againse a price wall.

I read a thread about them. Might have been here, so try a search. Anyway, the guy did a "study" of 2 or 3 different ones, and found them to work pretty good IF you put a small( think Q tip) white object about 1/2 inch from the end of the scope to help spread the light.

Theres even an adapter for your smart phone now that is pretty cool man. One is on order Ill be the first person to leave it in at the range to see how good the warranty is lol

and this is what you will see . on this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/381081996329?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Yes, I remember seeing a video of someone doing exactly that. He made a standoff and used something white.. cant remember what it was, might have been foam or something it the results were pretty impressive. Just ordered one of these so I'll try it out.

For $18, it's not bad... A lot better than you can see without some sort of scope. The biggest issues becomes focus/clarity, view angle, light, color, etc. it's one of those get what you pay for, and it his case you're not paying much, but still able to gain view into the chamber and bore with limited detail. I've spent way more on way less - I'd lump it in the low risk/medium reward category.

Why does the image look better in the 7 mag barrel in reply no.7???

Thanks for the tip Joe. If it can give me a comfort level as to whether i got all copper out it will be beyond a bargain at $20.

I have both digital bore scopes , the $18 is good , I use a $2 multi strand fiber optic HAIR attachment thing from Amazon . I adjust the intensity by the # of strands I stick in the bore . I still use my Hawkeye for barrel work .

Mine came in today. I did not order anything else with it. I'm planning to make a standoff out of a straw to keep a white Styrofoam plug an inch or two in front of the camera.

If the results are good I'll add an update here.

By chance has anyone tried the version that comes with a mirror attachment to view at 90 degrees?

Well, here it is in all it's glory. Just ran a few quick tests. Two videos here.. one just as it came and the other with the stand-off I spoke of earlier. I think it will do what most are looking for, too see if you got the copper out. Sadly I've neglected this K31 and the bore looks like a copper mine in these videos. I'll clean the barrel out and make another video to show the difference.

The only match grade barrel I own is a Lilja that is on my grendel. I'll get a video uploaded of that too.

(embedding youtube videos doesnt seem to work :( )

I have the 90 degree mirror. I have tried it only once because it feels like if you were walking while looking down at your feet. You don't know where you are, you don't where you've been and you don't know where you're going. It seems worthless to me. YMMV.

jimbo88mm,
My experience is that the borescope actually displays a better picture/movie than it records. Is that the case for yours? Thanks for the videos.
By the way I had the same experience as you did. I thought I had a clean barrel, it turned out to look worse than yours. I used Montana Xtreme Copper Killer to clean it. That stuff is really powerful, a couple applications and it was all gone. IMO, the Shooters Choice Copper Remover, Hoppe's #9 Copper Solvent, and KG12 turned out to be a waste of time and money.

Once I got it clean a friend turned me on to Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner and with one application removes everything and keeps my barrel sparkling clean like a new barrel.

Seeing in there is the only way to know what works.

Kindest regards,

Joe
