$20 borescope

Yes, I have. It fits just fine. There isn't much room left but it slides in effortlessly. The 90 degree mirror tip doesn't fit.

Ordered one, going to try it.

Mine came in today. I loaded the software. From what I can see, it's not a bad item for the money. I am still working with it.

That looks to be the exact same one I purchased except mine has a 5 meter cable and the one you linked is 2 meters. The part that plugs into the usb port has a brightness dial.

The software is just freeware webcam software. You can probably use any webcam capture software with it. As far as drivers go, none are provided but it windows detected it and used its native driver.

Thanks for the tip all

I've been holding off on buying one of the 5.5mm USB scopes, because it will be a matter of time until they come out with one that dispalys a HD picture (720 or 1080). Although, the price point for the current models is pretty amazing... Thanks to the guys that posted pictures and videos. This is good stuff!

The Lyman borescope is available. Optics planet has them in stock. Just wondering if anyone got and what they think about it?

By chance has anyone tried the version that comes with a mirror attachment to view at 90 degrees?

jimbo88mm,
My experience is that the borescope actually displays a better picture/movie than it records. Is that the case for yours? Thanks for the videos.
By the way I had the same experience as you did. I thought I had a clean barrel, it turned out to look worse than yours. I used Montana Xtreme Copper Killer to clean it. That stuff is really powerful, a couple applications and it was all gone. IMO, the Shooters Choice Copper Remover, Hoppe's #9 Copper Solvent, and KG12 turned out to be a waste of time and money.

Once I got it clean a friend turned me on to Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner and with one application removes everything and keeps my barrel sparkling clean like a new barrel.

Seeing in there is the only way to know what works.

Kindest regards,

Joe

Hey Joe, sorry I missed your question.

I hadn't noticed that it looks better live than the recording, but my setup is not ideal (Computer in relation to gun rest). I'll have to play with that. The AVI files that are created are pretty large. I used Microsoft Movie Maker to convert them to mp4. Not only did it compress them from around 1 gig to 12 megs(!) but to my eye it improved the image quality a tiny bit.

For Copper I use to use Wipeout but I've been using butches bore shine lately. I have not attacked that K31 yet.. but planning to.

Compared to a Hawkeye it's like watching early '50's TV to today's LED HD version. I don't see what this scope tells you that you can't learn from a properly fitted 2 cent patch and a good bore cleaner. If the YouTube videos are representative of actual use, the clarity is just not there. You really need a 90 degree view to gain useful information.

For $20 there's lots of uses for the tool.

Best copper cleaner I've used is Barnes CR-10. Have not tried or seen the Montana product, but tried all the others, including Outers Foul-Out. Saw a Darrel Holland video where he was liberally applying Barnes on a phosphor brush and Dewey rod cleaning a LR rifle between target change. That really works well!

But think how cool TV was back in the 50's. You are still seeing things you were never able to see before. Try having a look at the throat of your chamber or the gas port on a semi auto with a 2 cent patch and bore cleaner.
.... And you are $750 ahead

In the end, all that matters is accuracy. it takes a certain degree of fouling to season a bore to get to a certain accuracy level. A seasoned shooter can feel what's going on with a tight patch....much more meaningful that "looking" through a device with inferior optics. Can the $20 scope ascertain dimensional uniformity of the bore? Can it absolutely determine every last trace of copper is removed? - a patch with a good bore solvent will reveal copper in the corners of the grooves, I can't see enough detail in the Youtube vids to determine this.
Using the tried and true 2 cent patch you'll be $19.98 ahead and will answer questions the Chinese borescope cannot even address. I doubt you can even tell the start of a carbon ring forming until it gets to the size where it is near impossible to remove.
If the Youtube vid is accurate IMHO the detail shown by the Hawkeye is several orders of magnitude greater than the import. For me it would be totally useless.

I bought a 5.5 and a 7mm just to see how they worked. I would say the two I bought were absolutely worthless for inspecting a barrel. Save your money. A hawkeye borescope is what you need to inspect a barrel, these $20 jobbies do nothing but waste your hard earned money.

I bought the $200 Amazon Borescope mentioned in this thread ( $220 when I bought it and $179 now) and was not impressed with it at all. It was actually sold by a second party through Amazon. I returned it for a refund which I applied toward a Hawkeye. They offered me a large discount if I would keep it but after looking through a Hawkeye of another shooter I knew the Hawkeye was the way to go. Maybe the Lyman Borescope will be a good scope when it comes out. I will be anxious to look through one and compare it to my Hawkeye.

I'm not giving up on this borescope just yet. It's a cheap camera that is unable to focus. The focal point is too far forward for the cameras low resolution. As seen in the first two videos, I tried using a straw to manually set a fixed focal plane helped a little.

To try something different, I attached a brass cap at the end of a cheap aluminum cleaning rod and went in from the muzzle. The results were much improved, but still not good enough to see any real detail. On the positive side, I was concerned about the lands in this K31 at the throat, looking at this the lands appear to be in good shape.

The brass color is obviously not the best, maybe polished aluminum will work better.

On the Saubier site,
one of our members did some testing of various bore scopes etc.

He found a way to improve the lower end scopes, etc,
might be worth watching, for you guys, see info here:

Well I got to look down 4 barrels, and as I was pushing a small wad of tissue in front of the scope, it died. I must have put too much pressure against it, or it just failed. Couldn't see great detail but for the dough (4 old fashions) it's o.k. Barlow
